État 231-501 To 231-783
État to 231-783 was a series of 4-6-2 steam locomotives of the ''Chemin de fer de l'État'' ("the ''État''"). 289 engines of this series were built starting in 1914, with deliveries from 1916 through 1923. They replaced and supplemented the 231 B that had a tendency to derail. The class was numbered to 231-783 by the ''État'' and 231.C.501 to 231.C.783 by the SNCF; with class letters "C" through "H" used depending on the level of rebuilding and modernisation. The first locomotives were built by Fives-Lille; however only the first locomotive had entered service before the city of Lille was overrun by the advancing German Army during World War I. Dieppe Maritime station (French language, French: ''Gare Maritime de Dieppe'') was a railway station in the town of Dieppe, Seine-Maritime, France and was built by Chemins de fer de l'Ouest, CF de l'Ouest in 1874. Gare de Cherbourg is the railway station of the city of Cherbourg, Normandy, France. It is the western terminus of the Mantes-la-Jolie–Cherbourg railway. History On 5 September 1850, the president Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte visited Cherbourg and demanded the continuation of work on the Arsenal. He also demanded the construction of a railway line linking Cherbourg to Paris. The construction of the line was approved in 1852. Hugo Lentz
Hugo Lentz (1859–1944) was an Austrian mechanical engineer, born in Cape Colony. He was the inventor of many award-winning improvements to the steam engine. The correct spelling of his name is Lenz but it has been Anglicised to Lentz in English-speaking countries. Life and career Lentz was born on 21 July 1859 in Cape Colony. When he was six years old, his father died and the family returned to relatives in Germany. He became an engineer in the Prussian Navy. In 1888, Lentz founded his own machine factory in Vienna. At an exposition in honour of Alessandro Volta in Como in 1899, his first steam engine won the first prize.
