The Basilica of Saint Maurice of Épinal is a Catholic basilica located in the French commune of Épinal. It is a religious building constructed, in its current state, between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is part of the Diocese of Saint-Dié. History In the Middle Ages, the lands were under the jurisdiction of the Lord of Metz; ecclesiastically, they were under the Diocese of Toul, part of the parish of Dogneville. The basilica is believed to stand on the site of the city's first church, built in the 10th century by Bishop Gerard of Toul at the request of Thierry de Hamelant, Bishop of Metz. The parish was formed from five manses taken from the parish of Dogneville: Spinal, Grennevo, Avrinsart, Villers, and Rualménil. Marcel Mauss
Marcel Israël Mauss (; 10 May 1872 – 10 February 1950) was a French sociologist and anthropologist known as the "father of French ethnology". The nephew of Émile Durkheim, Mauss, in his academic work, crossed the boundaries between sociology and anthropology. Marc Boegner, commonly known as ''pasteur'' Boegner (; 21 February 1881 – 18 December 1970), was a French theologian, pastor, essayist, notable member of the French Resistance and a notable voice in the ecumenical movement. Biography Marc Boegner was the nephew and disciple of the Lutheran pastor Tommy Fallot, who founded Christian socialism in France. Born in Épinal, Vosges in 1881, Boegner was educated in Orléans, and later Paris, where he studied law. Poor eyesight was an obstacle to his pursuit of a career within the navy but after a spiritual conversion experience he entered the Faculty for Theology in Paris and in 1905 was ordained a pastor of the Reformed Church of France. Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial is a United States military cemetery in Dinozé, France. The site rests on a plateau above the Moselle River in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains. It contains the graves of 5,255 of the United States' military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the Battle of Alsace, and other northeast campaigns to the Rhine and beyond into Germany during World War II. History The cemetery was established in October 1944 by the 46th Quartermaster Company ( Graves Registration Service) of the U.S. Seventh Army as it drove northward from southern France through the Rhône Valley into Germany.
