Édouard Descamps
Baron Édouard Eugène François Descamps (1847–1933) was a Belgian jurist and politician who was known as a contributor to international law. Family He was the son of Edouard-J. Descamps and Sylvie Van der Elst. He was married to Maria David-Fischbach Malacord (1860–1921), who gave him three sons (of whom one died): * Pierre Descamps (1884–1965) * Emmanuel Descamps (1886–1968) Career He was a law professor at the University of Louvain, and it was at his suggestion that a committee of the League of Nations proposed an international court of justice. Between 1901–1907 and 1911–1914, he was president of the Senate, and he served until 1910 as Minister of sciences and arts. The Order of the Phoenix () is an Order (decoration), order of Greece, established on 13 May 1926, by the republicanism, republican government of the Second Hellenic Republic to replace the defunct Order of George I, Royal Order of George I. The order was retained after the restoration of the Kingdom of Greece (Glücksburg), monarchy in 1935 and continues to be awarded by the current Third Republic. The honour is bestowed by the Greek government to Greek citizens who have excelled in the arts and literature, science, public administration, shipping, commerce, and industry. It is also awarded to Alien (law), foreigners who have helped raise Greece's international prestige. History The Order of the Oak Crown was established in 1841 by William II of the Netherlands, Grand Duke William II, who was also King of the Netherlands. At that time, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands were in personal union in which both nations shared the same person as their respective head of state, though remaining as two distinct and independent nations.
