Éditions Lug
Éditions Lug () was a French comic book publisher based in Lyon, operating from 1950 to 1989. Originally known for publishing digest-sized reprints of old French and Italian comics, it then created its own characters and titles, such as the Tarzanesque '' Zembla''. Later, Lug began licensing and publishing translated versions of Marvel Comics superhero comics with titles such as '' Fantask'', ''Marvel'', and most notably, ''Strange''. In 1989, the company was acquired by the Semic Group, a Scandinavian comic book publisher, and later became a French company, Semic Comics. History Origins Éditions Lug was created in 1950 by writer/editor Marcel Navarro and businessman Auguste Vistel. The name of the company came from Lugdunum, the Gallo-Roman name for the city of Lyon. Luciano Bernasconi
Luciano Bernasconi (born 1939, Rome) is an Italian comic book artist. In the early 1960s, he worked for fellow artist Carlo Cedroni's Studio Barbato, Éditions Lug in France, and Edizioni Europer in Rome. Career Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Bernasconi became one of Lug's major artists, co-creating a number of major characters such as ''Wampus'', ''Kabur'' and ''Phenix'' and also ''Ami Barry'', ''L'Autre (character), L'Autre'', ''Billy Boyd (comics), Billy Boyd'', ''Bob Lance'', ''Comte de Saint-Germain (french comic), Comte de Saint-Germain'', ''Frères Thunderbolt'', ''Gladiateur de Bronze'', ''Jean Girodet'', ''Jeff Sullivan (Futura), Jeff Sullivan'', ''Kit Kappa'', ''Sibilla'', ''Starlock'' and ''Waki (comic book), Waki''. Gallo-Roman Culture
Gallo-Roman culture was a consequence of the Romanization of Gauls under the rule of the Roman Empire in Roman Gaul. It was characterized by the Gaulish adoption or adaptation of Roman culture, language, morals and way of life in a uniquely Gaulish context. The well-studied meld of cultures in Gaul gives historians a model against which to compare and contrast parallel developments of Romanization in other less-studied Roman provinces. A gun is a device that propels a projectile using pressure or explosive force. The projectiles are typically solid, but can also be pressurized liquid (e.g. in water guns or cannons), or gas (e.g. light-gas gun). Tanka (character)
is a genre of classical Japanese poetry and one of the major genres of Japanese literature. Etymology Originally, in the time of the influential poetry anthology (latter half of the eighth century AD), the term ''tanka'' was used to distinguish "short poems" from the longer . Dan Dare
Dan Dare is a British science fiction comic hero, created by illustrator Frank Hampson who also wrote the first stories. Dare appeared in the ''Eagle'' comic series ''Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future'' from 1950 to 1967 (and subsequently in reprints), and dramatised seven times a week on Radio Luxembourg (1951–1956). The stories were set in the late 1990s, but the dialogue and manner of the characters is reminiscent of British war films of the 1950s. Dan Dare has been described as " Biggles in Space" and as the British equivalent of Buck Rogers.
