''Ænima'' ( ) is the second studio album by the American rock band Tool. It was released in vinyl format on September 17, 1996, and in compact disc format on October 1, 1996, through Zoo Entertainment. The album was recorded and cut at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood and The Hook in North Hollywood from 1995 to 1996. It is the first album by Tool to feature bassist Justin Chancellor, who replaced original bassist Paul D'Amour the year prior. The album was produced by David Bottrill. The album debuted at No. 2 on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart upon its initial release, selling 148,000 copies in its first week. It was certified triple platinum by the RIAA on March 4, 2003. The album appeared on lists of the best albums of 1996 in ''Kerrang!'' and '' Terrorizer''. The track "Ænema" won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1998. Tool is an American Rock music, rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. "Ænema" is a song by American rock band Tool, released as a promotional single from their second major-label release ''Ænima''. Adam Jones made a video for the song using stop-motion animation; it is included in the '' Salival'' box set. The song reached number twenty-five on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in August 1997. The song makes extensive use of hemiola, a musical technique in which the emphasis in a triple meter is changed to give the illusion that both a duple and a triple meter occur in the song. The song is cast in terminally climactic form, in which two verse/chorus pairs give way to a climactic ending on new material. Peach (band)
Justin Gunnar Walter Chancellor (born 19 November 1971) is an English musician, best known as the bassist for rock band Tool, a position he has held since 1995. Prior to joining Tool, he played in a band called Peach. After settling in the US, along with his engagement in his musical projects, he and his wife Shelee Dykman Chancellor ran a store called Lobal Orning in Topanga, California, dedicated to music and literature "that shaped and changed" both of them. The store closed in 2008. He started M.T.Void music project with Piotr "Glaca" Mohammed from Sweet Noise. Early life Chancellor is of English and Norwegian descent. He was educated at Tonbridge School in Kent, England, where he was the bass player for a school band named Slice of Life and used to perform a cover version of Corey Hart's " Sunglasses at Night" in the dining room of his boarding house. It includes a 56-page book of photos and stills from their music videos. Background The live track "You Lied" is a cover of a song by bass player Justin Chancellor's previous band Peach. Produced by the band and Sylvia Massy and recorded from October to December 1992 at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys and Grandmaster Recorders in Hollywood, the album includes some tracks omitted from the band's debut EP ''Opiate'' and is their only album to feature original bassist Paul D'Amour. Paul D'Amour (born 1968 or 1969) is an American musician who was the original bassist for Tool. His bass sound is recognized by the aggressive picked tone he developed with his Chris Squire Signature Rickenbacker 4001CS, which can be heard on Tool's first full-length album, '' Undertow''. Since March 2019, he has been the bassist for industrial metal band Ministry. Biography D'Amour was born in Spokane, Washington. Originally a guitarist, D'Amour became Tool's bassist after being introduced to the band by Adam Jones. Like Jones, D'Amour was in Los Angeles because of his wish to enter the film industry. D'Amour built movie sets and worked in an art department on music videos and commercials.
