Aalholm, also Aalholm Castle (), is a castle and country estate in Nysted in the municipality of Guldborgsund, on the south coast of the island of Lolland, Denmark. It is the oldest castle on the island, first mentioned in 1329. The main building was built in 1300–1585, with major rebuilding especially in 1768 and in 1889 under Hans Jørgen Holm and Gotfred Tvede. Inscriptions in the building show that it was originally completed in 1585. History The castle was initially the seat of the king's vassal or ''lensmand'', and thus the centre of local government. It is not known when the castle was founded, but for historical reasons, it was probably around 1200. During this period, a number of royal castles were built across the country to strengthen the king's power in the regions and guard against attack. Johan Otto Raben
Johan Otto Raben (22 February 1646 — 11 November 1719) was a Denmark, Danish military officer and court official who served as lord chamberlain for Christian V of Denmark, Christian V and as county governor of Drederiksborg County, Frederiksborg and Kronborg Castle, Kronborg counties in North Zealand. He was the progenitor of the Danish Aalholm#Raben family, Raben family. Early life and education Raben was born on 22 February 1646 in Mecklenburg to colonel Victor Raben and Sophie Hedevig von Walschleben. Career Raben was appointed court page (''hofjunker'') at the Danish court in 1667. In 1671, he was promoted to ''kammerjunker''. He later joined the army. In 1676, he was appointed ''rittmeister, ritmester'' at the 2nd Jutland Cavalry Regiment. 1677 saw him promoted to major an dcolonel-lieutenant. Nykøbing Falster (; originally named Nykøbing) is a city on the island of Falster in southern Denmark. It has a population of 16,682 (1 January 2025). Including the satellite town Sundby (Lolland), Sundby on the Lolland side, with a population of 3,246, the total population is 19,928.
