Ã…lesund Fire
The Ålesund fire happened on 23 January 1904 in the Norwegian city of Ålesund. It destroyed almost the whole city centre, built mostly of wood, like the majority of Norwegian towns at the time. The town has since been rebuilt and it is now the administrative centre of Ålesund Municipality. Fire The fire started around 2 am on the island of '' Aspøya'', in the Aalesund Preserving Co.’s factory, which was located where Lower Strand Street 39 (''Nedre Strandgate 39'') is located today. It is actually stated that the fire started because a cow kicked a torch. In spite of valiant efforts at suppression, the wind-driven fire destroyed much of the town. The fire burned to a point just west of what today is called ''Brusdalshagen'', going at least as far as Borgundvegen 39. The last and easternmost house which burned stood where Borgundvegen 37 stands today.
