Ådal is a valley in the municipality of Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike and was a former municipality in Buskerud County, Norway. The municipality was created in 1857 by a split from Norderhov. At that time Ådal had a population of 2,382. On 1 January 1964 Ådal was merged with Hønefoss, Tyristrand, Hole, Norway, Hole and Norderhov to form the new municipality Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike. Prior to the merger Ådal had a population of 3,442. Traditionally the Ådal parish has been divided three ways. Ytre Ådal includes the village of Hallingby and is the site of Hallingby school and Hval Church (''Hval kirke''). Øvre Ådal includes the village of Nes, Ådal and is the site of Nes school, Ringmoen school and Nes Church (''Nes kirke''). Nes i Ådal is a small village in the valley of Ådal in the municipality Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike in Buskerud, Norway. The village lies on both sides of the river Begna (river), Begna, just north of the river's outlet in Lake Sperillen. It is situated on European route E16 north of Hønefoss, towards Valdres and Western Norway, Vestlandet. The road to Hedal stave church, Hedalen splits off from the E16 at Nes. Nes is a common Norwegian place name. In Old Norse, the word Nes means headland or promontory. In the case of Nes i Ådal, the name derives from the old farm Nes, which in medieval times was under the Ancient Diocese of Hamar, Diocese of Hamar. Buskerud
Buskerud () is a Counties of Norway, county and a current electoral district in Norway, bordering Akershus, Oslo, Innlandet, Vestland, Telemark and Vestfold. The region extends from the Oslofjord and Drammensfjorden in the southeast to Hardangervidda mountain range in the northwest. The county administration was in modern times located in Drammen. Buskerud was merged with Akershus and Østfold into the newly created Viken (county), Viken County on 1 January 2020. This is a list of former List of municipalities of Norway, municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. By 1958, the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with ''ladested'' status. A Schei Committee, committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. By 1966, most of the mergers had been carried out and there were only 470 municipalities remaining. Begna River
The Begna is a river in Buskerud and Innlandet counties in Norway. The long river runs from the Filefjell mountain area through Valdres to the town of Hønefoss where it joins the river Randselva before it empties into the Tyrifjorden. The river Begna drains a watershed of and this is the primary river in the watershed. Along its course, the river passes through the village of Begna in Sør-Aurdal Municipality. The Norwegian writer, Mikkjel Fønhus lived much of his life and located most of his novels along the river Begna. Course The headwaters of the river is found in the Filefjell mountain plateau on the south side of the Jotunheimen mountains. Among the highest points of the headwaters are the lake Steinurdalstjern which sits at an elevation of above sea level. Norderhov
Norderhov is a former municipality located within Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike in Buskerud county, Norway. Municipality Norderhov municipality was established on January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 7,234. On 22 April 1852 the city of Hønefoss was separated from Norderhov to constitute a separate administrative unit. In 1857 the rural district Ådal was separated from Norderhov, leaving Norderhov with a population of 6,846. In 1938 a part of Norderhov with 268 inhabitants was moved to Hønefoss, and on 1 January 1964 the rest was merged with Hønefoss, Ådal, Tyristrand and Hole, Norway, Hole to form the new municipality Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike. Tyristrand
Tyristrand is a village in Ringerike municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. Background Tyristrand parish was designated a municipality following a split from Hole on 1 July 1916. The municipality of Hole made been established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). On 1 January 1964 Tyristrand was merged with the municipalities Hole, Hønefoss, Norderhov and Ådal to form the new municipality of Ringerike. Before the merger, Tyristrand had a population of 1,714. The village of Tyristrand is located on the western shore of Tyrifjorden, between Hønefoss and Vikersund. Hallingby
Hallingby is a village in Ringerike municipality in the county of Buskerud, Norway. Hallingby is located north of Hønefoss, along the European route E16 towards Valdres and Western Norway. Hallingby was one of five stations on the now defunct Sperillbanen, an abandoned railway which ran through Ringerike between the village of Hen and the port at Finstad on Lake Sperillen. Hval Church (''Hval kirke''), an octagonal church built in 1862, is the main church in the parish. The church is an octagonal central nave church of timber from 1862 and has 250 seats. The church was built from the same drawings originally designed by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch for the Nes Church. The church was restored during 1902, 1924, and 1962. In 1924, a new chapel in the timber was built and inaugurated in 1925. Hønefoss is an industrial center of inner Østlandet, containing several factories and other industry. As of 1 January 2022, Hønefoss had 16,547 inhabitants.
