(Like A) Nightmare
"(Like A) Nightmare" is a 1964 single recorded by The Andantes for the V.I.P. (Motown) label. Written and composed by Motown's main production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, it became the second and last official single by the session group from the company. The song's narrator tells off her lover, saying how it hurt her to find he's been unfaithful to her. :'' It was Like A Nightmare,'' :'' To know my love you didn't share,'' :'' Like A Nightmare,'' :'' To see you in a love affair.'' Although this is the only single credited to the group, it was actually their second single; their previous single "Too Hurt to Cry, Too Much in Love to Say Goodbye" was credited to "the Darnells". The Andantes
The Andantes were an American female session group for the Motown record label during the 1960s. Composed of Jackie Hicks, Marlene Barrow, and Louvain Demps, the group sang background vocals on numerous Motown recordings, including songs by Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Temptations, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, Jimmy Ruffin, Edwin Starr, the Supremes, the Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye and the Isley Brothers, among others. It is estimated they appeared on 20,000 recordings. The Andantes provided back-up singing on Motown singles starting in 1962. The group was most prominently used on all of the Four Tops' Holland–Dozier–Holland-produced hits, including " Baby I Need Your Loving", " I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", " Reach Out I'll Be There", and more. Ann Bogan
Ann Bogan (born 1941; sometimes credited as Anne Bogan) is an American singer, notable as recording member of the Motown girl-group The Andantes and later, a touring and recording member of The Marvelettes. Life and career Anne Bogan was born on March 17, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio. Bogan recorded one single as an Andante, released in 1964. Bogan joined the Marvelettes in 1967 after lead singer Gladys Horton departed. She can be heard on their releases Sophisticated Soul, In Full Bloom, and The Return of The Marvelettes, however neither Katherine Anderson or Bogan appear on the cover of The Return of The Marvelettes. The cover instead featured a new picture of Wanda Young and two fake Marvelettes (reportedly Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce Evans of The Undisputed Truth, whose faces are purposely unidentifiable) on horseback to emphasize the album's new title. The Funk Brothers
The Funk Brothers were a group of Detroit-based session musicians who performed the backing to most Motown recordings from 1959 until the company moved to Los Angeles in 1972. Its members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history. Among their hits are "My Girl (The Temptations song), My Girl", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Baby Love", "I Was Made to Love Her (song), I Was Made to Love Her", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "The Tears of a Clown", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "Heat Wave (1963 song), Heat Wave". Some combination of the members played on each of Motown's 100-plus U.S. R&B number one singles and 50-plus U.S. Pop number ones released from 1961 to 1972. Gladys Horton
Gladys Catherine Horton (May 30, 1945 – January 26, 2011) was an American R&B and pop singer, notable for being the founder and lead singer of the all-female vocal group the Marvelettes, the first successful Motown girl group. Biography Early life Born in Gainesville, Florida to parents of West Indies heritage, she was raised in the western Detroit suburb of Inkster, Michigan by foster parents in an housing project built by Henry Ford. Horton never knew her biological parents throughout her life, and lived with several foster families after being put up for adoption at nine months old. By the time of her high school years at Inkster High School, Gladys had taken a strong interest in singing, joining the high school glee club. In 1960, Horton formed a group with her former highschool glee club members Georgeanna Tillman, Katherine Anderson and Juanita Cowart. The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in Inkster, Michigan, Inkster, Michigan in 1960, consisting of schoolmates Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart (now Cowart Motley), and Georgia Dobbins, who was replaced by Wanda Young prior to the group signing their first record deal.
