Montserrat
Montserrat ( ) is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about long and wide, with roughly of coastline. It is nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrat's Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Premier Of Montserrat
The Premier of Montserrat is the head of government of the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat. The Premier is appointed by the Governor of Montserrat on behalf of the monarch of the United Kingdom, currently King Charles III. The current Premier of Montserrat is Easton Taylor-Farrell of the Movement for Change and Prosperity. The Premier is appointed by the Governor from among the members of the Legislative Assembly, which consists of nine elected members. Between 1960 and 2011 the position was known as the Chief Minister of Montserrat, this changed on 27 September 2011 when the Montserrat Constitution Order 2010 took effect. The first Premier of Montserrat was Reuben Meade, who was also the last Chief Minister. The Cabinet has replaced the Executive Council and consists of the Premier, the Attorney-General, the Financial Secretary, and three other ministers. Plymouth, Montserrat
Plymouth is a ghost town and the ''de jure'' capital of the island of Montserrat, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom located in the Leeward Island chain of the Lesser Antilles, West Indies. Constructed on historical lava deposits near the then long-inactive Soufrière Hills volcano, the town was evacuated in 1995 when the volcano resumed erupting. Plymouth was eventually abandoned permanently in 1997 after it was substantially buried by a series of pyroclastic flows and lahars. For centuries, it had been the only port of entry to the island. Plymouth is still the ''de jure'' capital of Montserrat, making it the only ghost town that is the capital of a political territory. Brades
Brades (also Brades Estate) is a town and the ''de facto'' capital of Montserrat since 1998 with an approximate population of 1,000. History The still ''de jure'' capital of Montserrat at Plymouth in the south of the island was abandoned in 1997 after it was buried by the eruptions of the Soufriere Hills volcano in 1995. Interim government buildings have since been built at Brades, becoming the new temporary capital in 1998. The move is intended to be temporary, but it has remained the island's ''de facto'' capital ever since. Several names have been suggested for the new official capital now being constructed in the Little Bay area. Sarah Tucker (diplomat)
Sarah Georgina Tucker (born 1968) has served as Governor of Montserrat since 6 April 2022. Early life Tucker was born in 1968. She is married to Howard John Tucker, and has adult sons. Tucker worked at Gallaher Group from 1994 to 2007. From 2008 to 2011, she was Director and Owner of Tickling the Trout Ltd. Government Tucker first entered government service as a Deputy Commercial Director for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) from 2011 to 2016. After taking unpaid leave to become a Director at Pencabe Associates Ltd, she returned to the FCO as Director of Corporate Capability from 2017 to 2020. Following a short stint as FCDO Head of Cruise Repatriation, Tucker became the FCDO Director of Strategy for the British Virgin Islands in 2020. The Governor of Montserrat is the representative of the British monarch in the United Kingdom's overseas territory of Montserrat. Little Bay is a port town under construction which is intended to be the future capital of the island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is adjacent to the town of Brades, where government headquarters are currently located. "Motherland" is the national song of the British overseas territory of Montserrat. It was composed by academic J. A. George Irish and written by former acting Governor of Montserrat Sir Howard A. Fergus. "Motherland" was officially passed into law by the Legislative Assembly of Montserrat as the Territorial Song of Montserrat in 2014, after an extensive public search for a national song through open participation by Montserratians at home and abroad. J. A. George Irish and Howard A. West Indies Federation
The West Indies Federation, also known as the West Indies, the Federation of the West Indies or the West Indian Federation, was a short-lived political union that existed from 3 January 1958 to 31 May 1962. Various islands in the Caribbean that were part of the British Empire, including Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, and those on the Leeward and Windward Islands, came together to form the Federation, with its capital in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
