Mintimer Shaimiyev
Mintimer Sharipovich Shaimiev ( tt-Cyrl, Минтимер Шәрип улы Шәймиев, translit=Mintimer Şärip ulı Şäymiev; russian: Минтиме́р Шари́пович Шайми́ев; born January 20, 1937) is a Russian former politician who served as the president of Tatarstan from 1991 to 2010. He was re-elected president in 1996, 2001, and 2005. Biography Shaimiev was born in the village of Anyakovo, in Aktanyshsky District of the Tatar ASSR. He graduated from the Kazan Agricultural Institute in 1959, and worked as an agricultural engineer. He joined the Communist Party in 1963. In 1967 he was an instructor and deputy head of the agricultural department at Tatarstan's regional party organization. In 1969 Shaimiev was appointed Minister for Amelioration and Water Economy of his republic and in 1983 he became the first deputy chair of the Tatar Council of Ministers. The president of the Republic of Tatarstan (russian: Президент Республики Татарстан; tt, Татарстан Республикасы Президенты) is the regional head of Tatarstan, Russia. The office was established in 1991. Title In 2017, following the expiration of the 1994 agreement between Moscow and Kazan which granted Tatarstan substantial autonomy, the title of ''president'' was expected to be replaced with ''head'', as it was done with other republics in Russia. The government of Tatarstan however resisted attempts to have the title abolished and the federal government declined to press the issue.
