Ibadan
Ibadan (, ; ) is the capital and most populous city of Oyo State, in Nigeria. It is the third-largest city by population in Nigeria after Lagos and Kano, with a total population of 3,649,000 as of 2021, and over 6 million people within its metropolitan area. It is the country's largest city by geographical area. At the time of Nigeria's independence in 1960, Ibadan was the largest and most populous city in the country, and the second most populous in Africa behind Cairo. Oyo State
Oyo State is an inland States of Nigeria, state in southwestern Nigeria. Lagelu
Lagelu, ''-- Oro a pata maja'' ("Oro" in Yoruba means a sprite) -- was the founder of Ibadan, around 1829. A military legend and Yorubas' generalissimo from Ile Ife, he founded two of the three cities ( Eba Odan and Eba'dan) that eventually became the city of Ibadan. Eba Odan + Eba'dan = Ibadan. The first military commander of Ibadan, Lagelu left Ile Ife and founded Eba Odan. This city was peaceful and prosperous until it was ravaged by neighbouring towns and cities. A very old Lagelu and some of his people survived this attack. He then formed another city called Eba'dan on top of "Ori Yangi" (meaning rocky mountain), now known as the Oja'ba (Oba's Market) in very close proximity to the ravaged city of Eba Odan. Anna Hinderer
Anna Hinderer or Anna Martin (1827–1870) was a British missionary to Ibadan, Yoruba Country which is now part of Nigeria. She is celebrated by a stained-glass window in Liverpool Cathedral. Life Hinderer was born in Hempnall in Norfolk in 1827. Her mother died when she was five and from the age of twelve she was cared for by her aunt and grandfather until she went to live in Lowestoft. In Lowestoft's vicarage she worked there as secretary to the Reverend Francis and Richenda Cunningham. Whilst serving as a Sunday School teacher she reported her own conversion. In 1852 they set out to establish a new mission in Yoruba Country in what is now known as part of Nigeria. Anna briefly stayed at Abeokuta. Yorubaland
Yorubaland () is the homeland and cultural region of the Yoruba people in West Africa. It spans the modern-day countries of Nigeria, Togo and Benin, and covers a total land area of 142,114 km2 or about 60% of the land area of Ghana. Nigeria is a federation of 36 states and 1 federal capital territory. Each of the 36 states is a semi-autonomous political unit that shares powers with the federal government as enumerated under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Western State (Nigeria)
The former Western State of Nigeria was formed in 1967 when the Western Region was subdivided into the states of Lagos and Western State. Ijebu Kingdom
Ijebu (also known as Jebu or Geebu) is a Yoruba kingdom in Nigeria. It was formed around the fifteenth century. According to legend, its ruling dynasty was founded by Obanta whose personal name was Ogborogan of Ile-Ife. Its contemporary successor is one of the country's traditional states. History of Ijebu The kingdom was one of the most developed in the region with a complex and highly organized government. The capital is at Ijebu Ode where the Awujale has his palace. Counterbalancing the Awujale is the Osugbo (known as the Ogboni in other parts of Nigeria), a council of all free born, titled men that acted as the kingdom's courts.
