Cantons Of France
The cantons of France are territorial subdivisions of the French Republic's departments and arrondissements. Apart from their role as organizational units in relation to certain aspects of the administration of public services and justice, the chief purpose of the cantons today is to serve as constituencies for the election of members of the representative assemblies established in each of France's territorial departments ( departmental councils, formerly general councils). For this reason, such elections were known in France as "cantonal elections", until 2015 when their name was changed to "departmental elections" to match the departmental councils' name. Bas-Rhin (; Alsatian: ''Unterelsàss'', ' or '; traditional german: links=no, Niederrhein; en, Lower Rhine) is a department in Alsace which is a part of the Grand Est super-region of France. The name means 'Lower Rhine', referring to its lower altitude among the two French Rhine departments: it is downstream of the Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine) department. Note that both belong to the European Upper Rhine region. Illkirch-Graffenstaden () is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. It is the second-largest suburb of the city of Strasbourg, and is adjacent to it on the south-southwest. Eschau, Bas-Rhin
Eschau (; gsw-FR, Àschoei) is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. It is situated 8 km south of Strasbourg. Population Sights Eschau's main sight is the '' Église Saint-Trophime'', a Romanesque church dedicated to Trophimus of Arles. The building dates back to the 8th century but has been rebuilt several times until the end of the 13th century. It contains relics of Sophia the Martyr in a Gothic chasse and several wooden polychrome 15th-century Gothic statues. The 12th-century cloister has been destroyed but several capitals and other pieces of Romanesque sculpture by the Master of Eschau have survived and are on display in the Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame. Ostwald, Bas-Rhin
Ostwald (; Alsatian: ''Oschwold'') is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Grand Est in north-eastern France. History The ancient name of Ostwald, Wickersheim, is first attested on a map of the emperor Charles the Fat in 884. In the time of the emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, within the realm of the Holy Roman Empire, the Hohenstaufens built a castle by the Ill River. In 1285, the city was acquired by the Zorn family of Strasbourg and took the name of Illwickersheim, also sometimes called ''Sankt Ostwald'' after the name of a parish. The plague of 1348 and mercenary raids in 1365 and 1376 decimated the population. In 1418 the city of Strasbourg gained control of Illwickersheim; at the same time it acquired Illkirch-Graffenstaden.
