Giant Pandas
The giant panda (''Ailuropoda melanoleuca''), also known as the panda bear or simply panda, is a bear species endemic to China. It is characterised by its white coat with black patches around the eyes, ears, legs and shoulders. Its body is rotund; adult individuals weigh and are typically long. It is sexually dimorphic, with males being typically 10 to 20% larger than females. A thumb is visible on its forepaw, which helps in holding bamboo in place for feeding. It has large molar teeth and expanded temporal fossa to meet its dietary requirements. It can digest starch and is mostly herbivorous with a diet consisting almost entirely of bamboo and bamboo shoots. Bei Bei ( ; Chinese: t , s , p ''Bèibèi'') is a male giant panda bear who was born and lived at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., in the United States. He was part of US-China relations panda diplomacy, and was sent to the People's Republic of China on November 19, 2019, at the age of 4. He is currently at the Ya’an Bifengxia Base of thGiant Panda Conservation and Research Centerin southwest Sichuan province. He is the brother of Tai Shan, Bao Bao, and Xiao Qi Ji. Birth Bei Bei was born on August 22, 2015, at 10:07 pm, together with a twin who was born at 5:35 pm that died from pneumonia 4 days after their birth. His mother is Mei Xiang. Beijing Zoo
Beijing Zoo is a zoological park in Xizhimen, Xicheng District, Beijing. Founded in 1906 during the late Qing dynasty, it is the oldest zoo in China and oldest public park in northern China. The zoo is also a center of zoological research that studies and breeds rare animals from various continents. The zoo occupies an area of , including of lakes and ponds in Xicheng District. It has one of the largest animal collections in the country. Gu Gu
Gu Gu (; 25 September 1999 – 16 January 2025) was a male giant panda at the Beijing Zoo, born on 25 September 1999 at the Wolong National Nature Reserve. He received international attention for incidents in which he attacked zoo visitors who trespassed into his enclosure. First incident On 19 September 2006, six year old Gu Gu bit a drunk Chinese man who had jumped into his enclosure and tried to hug him. Zhang Xinyan, a migrant worker from the central Henan province, had drunk several beers before arriving at the zoo. He cleared the railing around the enclosure, managed to approach the panda undetected, and moved to hug him. The bear bit Zhang on both legs. Gao Gao Panda
Gao (or Gawgaw/Kawkaw) is a city in Mali and the capital of the Gao Region. The city is located on the River Niger, east-southeast of Timbuktu on the left bank at the junction with the Tilemsi valley. For much of its history Gao was an important commercial centre involved in the trans-Saharan trade. In the 9th century external Arabic writers described Gao as an important regional power, and by the end of the 10th century, the local ruler was said to be a Muslim. Towards the end of the 13th century, Gao became part of the Mali Empire. In the first half of the 15th century the town regained its independence. With the conquests of Sunni Ali (ruled 1464–1492) it became the capital of the Songhai Empire. Gao Gao () is a male giant panda formerly at the San Diego Zoo from 2003 to 2018 and was then returned to China. He was diagnosed with a heart murmur in 2013. His right testicle was removed for health in 2014. To date, he has fathered five giant pandas in captivity. History Gao Gao was born in the wild in People's Republic of China, China, around 1990, and was taken to the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, Fengtongzhai Nature Reserve in 1993 suffering from injuries which resulted in the loss of nearly two thirds of his left ear. On April 12, 1995, Gao Gao was released to the wild in good health, as featured in the Chinese documentary Returning Home. Chongqing Zoo () is a zoo in the city of Chongqing, China, about 8 km (5 miles) southwest from the city centre. Overview The zoo is located at Yangjiaping on Xijiao Road in the Jiulongpo District of Chongqing. It was built in 1953 and officially opened to the public in 1955. The zoo covers an area of 45 hectares (111 acres). The zoo is an important base for the protection of and research on wild animals. Er Shun
Er Shun is a female giant panda, born at the Chongqing Zoo. On Monday, March 25, 2013, two giant pandas Er Shun (female) and Da Mao (male) arrived at Toronto Zoo, with their exhibit (the refurbished Amur tiger exhibit) opening to the public on May 18. The bears are on a 10-year Canada tour from the Chengdu Panda Base and Chongqing Zoo, residing in Toronto from 2013 to 2017 and at the Calgary Zoo from 2018 to 2022. When plans were first made to bring giant pandas to Canada, Er Shun was believed to be male, and had been paired with a female from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for the journey. Months before her departure her true sex was determined and the known female switched out for male Da Mao. Jia Yueyue
Jia Yueyue (, ) and Jia Panpan (, ) are twin giant pandas (''Ailuropoda melanoleuca'') born at the Toronto Zoo on 13 October 2015, to mother, Er Shun and father, Da Mao. They were the first giant pandas to be born in Canada, and only the second giant panda twins to survive the neonatal period in North America. Their birth was the result of one of two artificial insemination procedures overnight from 13 to 14 May 2015. The pandas went on public exhibit at the zoo on 12 March 2016. The last day that the giant pandas were viewable at the Toronto Zoo was 18 March 2018. The two pandas have since left Canada and now reside at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
