The feminine is ' (, meaning "goddess"); with the article, it appears as ' (). The Arabic word for God (') is thought to be derived from it (in a proposed earlier form ''al-Lāh'') though this is disputed. is cognate to Northwest Semitic '' '' and Akkadian ''ilum''.
