Kyūshū
is the third-largest island of Japan's five main islands and the most southerly of the four largest islands ( i.e. excluding Okinawa). In the past, it has been known as , and . The historical regional name referred to Kyushu and its surrounding islands. Kyushu has a land area of and a population of 14,311,224 in 2018. In the 8th-century Taihō Code reforms, Dazaifu was established as a special administrative term for the region. Geography The island is mountainous, and Japan's most active volcano, Mount Aso at , is on Kyushu. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. Cape Sata
Cape Sata (佐多岬, ''Sata Misaki'') is a cape at the southern tip of the Ōsumi Peninsula of Kyūshū island, Japan, and is the southernmost point of the island, just south of 31 degrees latitude. Cape Sata is home to a lighthouse built in 1871, designed by the Scotsman Richard Henry Brunton. Prior to 2013, the land was under the jurisdiction of a private company, and cost 300 yen to enter with open hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. However, Sata is now free to enter, and its abandoned restaurant and observation deck have since been torn down. Alan Booth's 1986 book ''The Roads to Sata'' details his walk from Cape Sōya at the northern tip of Hokkaidō south to Cape Sata. Kagoshima Bay

Kagoshima Bay is on the south coast of the island of Kyūshū. The port city of Kagoshima and its well-protected harbor lie on the bay's western coast, just opposite the island of Sakurajima. Geology The bay itself is partially volcanic in origin, with two massive submarine calderas shaping part of the bay's shoreline: The younger Aira Caldera in the northernmost part of the bay, and the older Ata Caldera at the mouth of the bay where it meets the East China Sea. Both calderas formed during the Pleistocene from highly explosive Ultra-Plinian volcanic eruptions, Aira approximately 22,000 years ago and Ata approximately 105,000 years ago. Sakurajima
Sakurajima ( ja, 桜島, literally "Cherry Blossom Island") is an active stratovolcano, formerly an island and now a peninsula, in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption connected it with the Ōsumi Peninsula. It is the most active volcano in Japan. As of April 2021, the volcanic activity still continues, dropping volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earlier eruptions built the white sand highlands in the region. On September 13, 2016, a team of experts from Bristol University and the Sakurajima Volcano Research Centre in Japan suggested that the volcano could have a major eruption within 30 years; since then two eruptions have occurred. Sakurajima is a stratovolcano. Its summit has three peaks, ''Kita-dake'' (northern peak), ''Naka-dake'' ( central peak) and ''Minami-dake'' (southern peak) which is active now.
