Änglagård
Änglagård is a Swedish progressive rock band, with influences including King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Trettioåriga Kriget, Schicke Führs Fröhling, and Van der Graaf Generator. The band was established in 1991 by Tord Lindman (guitars and vocals) and Johan Högberg (bass guitar), and broke up in 1994. They briefly reformed in 2002–2003, and have been active again since 2009. They combine vintage analog sounds with a modern classical approach to composing and arranging. To date, they have released three studio albums and three live recordings to great acclaim from the progressive rock community. History '' Hybris'', the debut release, and the follow-on instrumental '' Epilog'' of 1994, were both voted "album of the year" in polls of progressive rock fans. Mattias Olsson
Mattias Olsson (born 9 January 1975) started his career as a classical percussionist playing in orchestras and big bands on Ekerö outside of Stockholm. As a sideline to recording and producing bands Mattias Olsson writes articles (music-related) for several Swedish magazines. Early life He was born in Hong Kong to Swedish parents. In 1981 he moved to Stockholm. Starting as a drummer at eight years old he started off playing in big bands, pop and classical ensembles. Career When he was 17 he joined progressive rock band Änglagård. Änglagård consisted of musicians from Ekerö as well as Waxholm. The band was heavily influenced by bands such as King Crimson, Yes and Genesis but also listened to less famous bands such as Shylock, Cathedral and Yezda Urfa. Hybris (album)
''Hybris'' (Swedish: ' hubris') is the first studio album by Swedish progressive rock group Änglagård. Released in late 1992, it would become one of the most influential albums of the new wave of progressive rock in the 1990s. It begins with "" (which means 'earth-smoke'), the only fully instrumental piece on the album. The music is quite similar to 1970s progressive rock groups such as Yes, Cathedral and King Crimson, but Änglagård has also created their own style, thanks to Holmgren's folklore-sounding flute playing and Olsson's highly distinctive drumming (he was only 17 in 1992). There are also obvious similarities to the obscure 1970s band Cathedral's one-shot album ''Stained Glass Stories''. Keyboardist Pär Lindh makes an uncredited guest appearance on the album. Epilog (album)
Epilog is the second studio album from the Swedish progressive rock group Änglagård. A darker and completely instrumental work, it was supposed to be the final chapter of Änglagård, hence the name. Availability Although re-released in 2003 on the Exergy label, it was unavailable for a long time until it was re-released by the band in 2010 as a double CD. NEARfest
The North East Art Rock Festival, or NEARfest for short, was a multi-day event celebrating the resurgence of progressive and eclectic music in the United States and around the world. The event was held annually in early summer in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, approximately one hour north of Philadelphia and less than two hours west of New York City. The festival was founded in the spring of 1998 by Robert LaDuca and Chad Hutchinson, with the first event occurring in 1999. NEARfest quickly grew to become "the most prestigious progressive music festival in the world." On October 17, 2011, founders Hutchinson and LaDuca, and production manager Kevin Feeley announced that the final edition of the festival, entitled ''NEARfest Apocalypse'', would take place on the weekend of June 22, 23, and 24, 2012 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. ProjeKcts
The ProjeKcts are a succession of spin-off projects associated with the band King Crimson. The ProjeKcts were most active from 1997 to 1999, but have performed intermittently since. These earlier ProjeKcts, up to ProjeKct Six in 2006, were devoted to instrumental and heavily improvised music. All of them included King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp, who described their purpose as being "research and development" for King Crimson. Two later spin-off projects were of a different nature, but both involving former King Crimson members. Van Der Graaf Generator
Van der Graaf Generator are an English progressive rock band, formed in 1967 in Manchester by singer-songwriters Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith and the first act signed by Charisma Records. They did not experience much commercial success in the UK, but became popular in Italy during the 1970s. In 2005 the band reformed, and are still musically active with a line-up of Hammill, organist Hugh Banton and drummer Guy Evans. The band formed at the University of Manchester, but settled in London where they signed with Charisma. They went through several incarnations in their early years, including a brief split in 1969. Bass Guitar
The bass guitar, electric bass or simply bass (), is the lowest-pitched member of the string family. It is a plucked string instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric or an acoustic guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and typically four to six strings or courses. Since the mid-1950s, the bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The four-string bass is usually tuned the same as the double bass, which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than the four lowest-pitched strings of a guitar (typically E, A, D, and G). Trettioåriga Kriget
Trettioåriga Kriget (Swedish for '' Thirty Years' War'') is a Swedish progressive rock group, formed in Saltsjöbaden, south of Stockholm, Sweden in 1970. Biography The band was formed by members Stefan Fredin and Olle Thörnvall while they were still in high school. According to Fredin, during a history class Fredin shared with another original member Pocke Öhrström, "After a history lesson covering the Thirty Years' War, we both found that this name was perfect for the band. The reason was that it sounded both powerful and Swedish". The group was a six piece at first, including members Dag Lundquist, Johan Gullberg (who has since designed album covers for the group), and Dag “Krok” Kronlund. Gullberg, Öhrström, and Gullberg left the group in 1971. Singer Robert Zima joined shortly afterwards, along with guitarist Christer Åkerberg in 1972.
