Chalk
Chalk is a soft, white, porous, sedimentary carbonate rock. It is a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite and originally formed deep under the sea by the compression of microscopic plankton that had settled to the sea floor. Chalk is common throughout Western Europe, where deposits underlie parts of France, and steep cliffs are often seen where they meet the sea in places such as the Dover cliffs on the Kent coast of the English Channel. Chalk is mined for use in industry, such as for quicklime, bricks and builder's putty, and in agriculture, for raising pH in soils with high acidity. It is also used for " blackboard chalk" for writing and drawing on various types of surfaces, although these can also be manufactured from other carbonate-based minerals, or gypsum. Whiting River
The Whiting River is a stream, about long, in the U.S. state of Alaska and the Canadian province of British Columbia. It enters the waters of Stephens Passage at the Borough of Juneau in the Alaska Panhandle between the mouths of the Taku and Stikine Rivers. The main tributary of the Whiting is the South Whiting. The river's basin is at the northern end of the Stikine Icecap The river crosses the international boundary at . Naval Air Station Whiting Field is a United States Navy base located near Milton, Florida, with some outlying fields near Navarre, Florida, in south and central Santa Rosa County, and is one of the Navy's two primary pilot training bases (the other being NAS Corpus Christi, Texas). Whitings Hill Open Space
Whitings Hill Open Space is a large public open space in Chipping Barnet in the London Borough of Barnet. It is mainly grassed with clumps of young trees, planted as part of the Watling Chase Community Forest, and a few mature trees. There are good views in all directions from the top of Whitings Hill. A small stream, a tributary of Dollis Brook, flows through the site. There is access from Shelford Road, Quinta Drive, Brett Road and Hackforth Close. Whitings Wood Whitings Wood is a seven hectare site adjacent to Whitings Hill Open Space on the south west side. It was planted with trees by the Woodland Trust on former grassland in 1996. It is mainly oak, ash, field maple and woody shrubs. There is access from Mays Lane and from the Open Space.
