Titin
Titin (; also called connectin) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ''TTN'' gene. The protein, which is over 1 μm in length, functions as a molecular spring that is responsible for the passive elasticity of muscle. It comprises 244 individually folded protein domains connected by unstructured peptide sequences. These domains unfold when the protein is stretched and refold when the tension is removed. Titin is important in the contraction of striated muscle tissues. It connects the Z disc to the M line in the sarcomere. The protein contributes to force transmission at the Z disc and resting tension in the I band region. It limits the range of motion of the sarcomere in tension, thus contributing to the passive stiffness of muscle. A sarcomere (Greek σάρξ ''sarx'' "flesh", μέρος ''meros'' "part") is the smallest functional unit of striated muscle tissue. It is the repeating unit between two Z-lines. In molecular biology, a protein domain is a region of a protein's Peptide, polypeptide chain that is self-stabilizing and that Protein folding, folds independently from the rest. Kuan Wang
Kuan Wang (; born September 9, 1945) is a Taiwanese biochemist known for his contributions to muscle biochemistry and cell biology. He has an h-index of 54. Education After graduating with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in chemistry from National Taiwan University, Wang came to the United States for graduate study and earned a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University in 1974 under the guidance of Frederic M. Richards. He was an NIH postdoctoral fellow (1974–1976) at the University of California, San Diego, in the laboratory of S. J. Singer. A myofibril (also known as a muscle fibril or sarcostyle) is a basic rod-like organelle of a muscle cell.
