Null²
null² (; pronounced "Nurunuru") is one of the 8 "signature" pavilions at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025. It was produced and directed by media artist Yoichi Ochiai. The exterior sculptural design was created by Yoichi Ochiai and NOIZ architects. The theme of null² is "Forging Life", and it was designed to be an architectural embodiment of Ochiai's concept of "Digital Nature". Name and concept The pavilion's name "null²" originates from the concept of "null" (undefined state) in computer science, combined with the philosophy of "form is emptiness, emptiness is form" () from the Heart Sutra in Buddhism. Yoichi Ochiai explains the meaning as "emptiness²" (emptiness (is form, form is) emptiness). Yoichi Ochiai
is a Japanese media artist, entrepreneur, and academic. He has a doctorate from the University of Tokyo, and is an associate professor at the University of Tsukuba Library; Information and Media Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Digital Nature Development and Research; Specially-appointed professor at Digital Hollywood University; as well as a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts and Kyoto City University of Arts, and Kanazawa College of Art. is a World Expo organised and sanctioned by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which is being held in Osaka, Japan. It took place for six months from 13 April to 13 October 2025. Expo 2025 Pavilions
is a World Expo that is hosted in Osaka, Japan, from 13 April 2025 to 13 October 2025. The pavilions in the expo were or being built in four types, A, X, B, C. In the type A, the participating countries planned and built the pavilion entirely on their own. For the type X, the expo association built the pavilion instead. For the type B and C, the expo association makes a building which countries use to set up booths or use a room. Out of 158 participating nations and regions, 47 used type A, 5 used type X. Number of pavilions entirely built by participating countries decreased by 11 from the previous Expo 2020. There are a total of 188 pavilions, out of which 152 are representatives of participating countries, 13 are hosted by private sectors, 8 "signature" pavilions, and 15 are hosted by organizations and the Japanese government. ''Dezeen'' is an online architecture, interiors and design magazine based in London, with offices in Hoxton, as well as New York City and Shanghai. Expo '70
The or Expo '70 was a world's fair held in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, between 15 March and 13 September 1970. Its theme was "Progress and Harmony for Mankind." In Japanese, Expo '70 is often referred to as . It was the first world's fair held in Japan and in Asia. Tarō Okamoto
was a Japanese artist, art theorist, and writer. He is particularly well known for his avant-garde paintings, public sculptures, and murals, his theorization of traditional Japanese culture, and his avant-garde artistic practices. Biography Early life (1911–1929) Tarō Okamoto was the son of cartoonist Okamoto Ippei and writer Okamoto Kanoko. He was born in Takatsu, in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture.
