Dibenzyl Sulfide
Dibenzyl sulfide is a symmetrical thioether. It contains two C6H5CH2- (benzyl) groups linked by a sulfide bridge. It is a colorless or white solid that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. Crystallography The crystal structure of the solid is of the orthorhombic system with space group ''Pbcn''; number 60. The unit cell dimensions are a=13.991 Å b=11.3985 Å c 7.2081 Å. The molecules in the gas take the same form as in the solid with a C2 symmetry. Potassium sulfide is an inorganic compound with the formula K2 S. The colourless solid is rarely encountered, because it reacts readily with water, a reaction that affords potassium hydrosulfide (KSH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH). Most commonly, the term potassium sulfide refers loosely to this mixture, not the anhydrous solid. Structure It adopts "antifluorite structure," which means that the small K+ ions occupy the tetrahedral (F−) sites in fluorite, and the larger S2− centers occupy the eight-coordinate sites. Benzyl chloride, or α-chlorotoluene, is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CH2Cl. This colorless liquid is a reactive organochlorine compound that is a widely used chemical building block. Preparation Benzyl chloride is prepared industrially by the gas-phase photochemical reaction of toluene with chlorine: :C6H5CH3 + Cl2 → C6H5CH2Cl + HCl In this way, approximately 100,000 tonnes are produced annually. The reaction proceeds by the free radical process, involving the intermediacy of free chlorine atoms. Side products of the reaction include benzal chloride and benzotrichloride.
