Anterolateral Tibial Tubercle
Gerdy's tubercle or anterolateral tibial tubercle, is a lateral tubercle of the tibia, located where the iliotibial tract inserts. It was named after French surgeon Pierre Nicolas Gerdy (1797–1856). Gerdy's tubercle is a smooth facet on the lateral aspect of the upper part of the tibia, just below the knee joint and adjacent to the proximal tibio-fibular joint, where the iliotibial tract runs down the outside part of the thigh In anatomy, the thigh is the area between the hip (pelvis) and the knee. Iliotibial Tract
The iliotibial tract or iliotibial band (ITB; also known as Maissiat's band or the IT band) is a longitudinal fibrous reinforcement of the fascia lata. The action of the muscles associated with the ITB ( tensor fasciae latae and some fibers of gluteus maximus) flex, extend, abduct, and laterally and medially rotate the hip. The ITB contributes to lateral knee stabilization. During knee extension the ITB moves anterior to the lateral condyle of the femur, while ~30 degrees knee flexion, the ITB moves posterior to the lateral condyle. However, it has been suggested that this is only an illusion due to the changing tension in the anterior and posterior fibers during movement. It originates at the anterolateral iliac tubercle portion of the external lip of the iliac crest and inserts at the lateral condyle of the tibia at Gerdy's tubercle. Pierre Nicolas Gerdy
Pierre Nicolas Gerdy (1 May 1797 – 18 March 1856) was a French physician who was a native of Loches-sur-Ource. He was a professor with the Faculty of Medicine in Paris, and worked with renowned surgeons such as Jacques Lisfranc de St. Martin (1790–1847), Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau, Armand Velpeau (1795–1867) and Guillaume Dupuytren (1777–1835). The famed anatomist Paul Broca (1824–1880) was an assistant to Gerdy for a few years during the 1840s. Gerdy was known for contributions as a surgeon, anatomist, pathologist and physiologist. He also worked with artists and sculptors, and in 1829 published ''Anatomie des formes extérieures du corps humain, appliqué à la peinture, à la sculpture et à la chirurgie'', a book of anatomy as it applied to sculpture, painting and surgery.
