Gauntlet (glove)
A gauntlet is a type of glove that protects the hand and wrist of a combatant. Gauntlets were used particularly in Europe between the early fourteenth century and the early modern period and were often constructed of hardened leather or metal plates. Gauntlets, which cover the hands, wrists, and sometimes forearms, are not to be confused with bracers, which cover the wrists and forearms but not the hands; bracers are common in medieval and fantasy cosplay. Types Armour Beginning in the 11th century, European soldiers and knights relied on chain mail for protection of their bodies, and chain armor "shirts" with wide sleeves that hung to the elbow were common. ''The Gauntlet'' is a children's historical novel, written by Ronald Welch, and published in 1951. It is a time slip story set both in 1951 (the present day) and in 1326, mainly in Carreg Cennen Castle, but also in Kidwelly Castle and Valle Crucis Abbey. Plot The story begins with Peter Staunton and his friend Gwyn Evans finding a rusted iron gauntlet while on holiday in the Brecon Beacons. When Peter puts the gauntlet on, he hears medieval sounds such as "the thud of hooves", and hears that there have been others who had had similar experiences. Peter then spends time learning about medieval life in Wales and neighbouring England and, after falling asleep in the garden of Carreg Cennen Castle, finds himself back in medieval times. ''The Gauntlet'' is a 1977 American action thriller film directed by Clint Eastwood, who stars alongside Sondra Locke. "The Gauntlet" and "Grim Hunt" are 2009–2010 comic book storylines published by Marvel Comics. Despite being more issues, "The Gauntlet" was solicited as leading up to the "Grim Hunt" story, and the two storylines are interconnected. Written by ''The Amazing Spider-Man'' architects (Mark Waid, Marc Guggenheim, Fred Van Lente and Joe Kelly (comics), Joe Kelly), "The Gauntlet" is not a strict event or storyline; it is the branding that indicates the direction of Spider-Man's life. In effect it is an event similar to Dark Reign (comics), Dark Reign only focusing on Spider-Man and his circle. ''The Gauntlet'' is a campus publication published by the Gauntlet Publications Society at the University of Calgary. Though commonly referred to as the "University of Calgary's newspaper", it is independent from the University administration and from the Student Union. It has a circulation of 4,000 as well as approximately 50,000 monthly online hits. In 2017, it transitioned from a weekly newspaper to a monthly magazine, but returned to the newspaper format (biweekly) in 2019. ''Mystery Science Theater 3000'' (abbreviated as ''MST3K'') is an American science fiction comedy television series created by Joel Hodgson. The show premiered on WUCW, KTMA-TV (now WUCW) in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on November 24, 1988.
