Jean-Paul Laurens
Jean-Paul Laurens (; 28 March 1838 – 23 March 1921) was a French painter and sculptor, and one of the last major exponents of the French Academic style. Biography Laurens was born in Fourquevaux and was a pupil of Léon Cogniet and Alexandre Bida. Strongly anti-clerical and republican, his work was often on historical and religious themes, through which he sought to convey a message of opposition to monarchical and clerical oppression. His erudition and technical mastery were much admired in his time, but in later years his highly realistic technique, coupled to a theatrical ''mise-en-scène'', came to be regarded by some art-historians as overly didactic. More recently, however, his work has been re-evaluated as an important and original renewal of history painting, a genre of painting that was in decline during Laurens' lifetime. The Académie Julian () was a private art school for painting and sculpture founded in Paris, France, in 1867 by French painter and teacher Rodolphe Julian (1839–1907) that was active from 1868 through 1968. Georges Dufrénoy
Georges Dufrénoy (June 20, 1870December 9, 1943) was a French post-Impressionist painter associated with Fauvism. Biography He was born in Thiais, France. His family lived at 2 Place des Vosges in Paris in a historic 17th-century building in which he lived all his life. Dufrénoy went to school at the Oratoriens Catholic school (école Massillon, 2 quai des Célestins, Paris 4ème) from age 5 to 17. At 17, after some hesitation between the study of architecture and painting, Dufrénoy chose to become a painter. Dufrénoy studied with Jean-Paul Laurens at the Académie Julian from 1887. In 1890 he began a period of two years as the only pupil of Désiré Laugier, from whom he learned a great deal. Angèle Delasalle
Mathilde Angèle Delasalle (25 February 1867 – c. 1941) was a French artist known for her painting and etching. Her works are held in the collections of many museums. Biography Delasalle first attended a convent school in Paris, the "Institution des Dames Augustines anglaises de Neuilly." From 1880 to 1890 she studied at the private art school Académie Julian and studied with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, Jean-Paul Laurens and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. Catharine Carter Critcher
Catharine (sometimes Catherine) Carter Critcher (September 13, 1868 – June 11, 1964) was an American painter. A native of Westmoreland County, Virginia, she worked in Paris and Washington, D.C. before becoming, in 1924, a member of the Taos Society of Artists, the only woman ever elected to that body. She was a long time member of the Arts Club of Washington. Biography Critcher was the daughter of Judge John Critcher and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Thomasia Kennon (Whiting) Critcher; she was their fourth daughter and the youngest of their five children. Emilio Boggio
Emilio Boggio (21 May 18577 June 1920) was an Italian-Venezuelan pioneering impressionist painter. In 1864 he traveled to France and studied at the Lycée Michelet in Paris until 1870. In 1873, he returned to Caracas and dedicated himself to the family business. In 1877, he returned to France to join the Académie Julian where he received lessons from Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1888, obtained a Hors Concours (Honorable Mention) at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français (Salon of French Artists) and in 1889, was awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Between 1907 and 1909, he resided in Italy, where he made a series of seascapes. In 1919, he traveled to Caracas for a few months and exhibited at the Central University of Venezuela. Jean-Pierre Laurens (18 March 1875, Paris23 April 1932, Fontenay-aux-Roses) was a French painter; primarily of figures and portraits. Biography He was the youngest son of the painter, Jean-Paul Laurens. His older brother, Paul Albert Laurens also became an artist,. and he was married to the sculptor, Yvonne Diéterle. He studied with Léon Bonnat at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first exhibit at the Salon came in 1899, when he was presented with a third-class medal. In 1900, he was awarded a silver medal and a travel grant. A second-class medal followed in 1906. Shortly after the beginning of World War I, he received a bullet wound to the leg and was taken prisoner near Rocquigny. In September, 1914, he was transferred to the prison camp at Wittenberg, south of Berlin, where he made sketches of the harsh conditions and the typhus epidemic that ravaged the camp. Paul Albert Laurens
Paul Albert Laurens (18 January 1870 - 27 September 1934) was a French painter. Biography Laurens was the eldest son of painter Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921), who was of humble origins, and his wife, Madeleine Willemsens (1848-1913). Laurens was born in Rue Taranne, off the Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris, to where his parents had moved. Aware of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, his father quickly moved his family back to the relative safety his native village, Fourquevaux in the Haute-Garonne department in southwestern France. The family home may still be found in the village today, near the church. Laurens' younger brother, Jean-Pierre Laurens (1875-1932), was also a painter.
