"I'm Born Again" / "Bahama Mama" is a double A-side single by German band Boney M. It was the second single from their fourth album ''Oceans of Fantasy'' (1979), not withcounting a promotional-only single release of "Let It All Be Music" and the album title track. Not as successful as previous singles, the ballad "I'm Born Again" peaked at #7 in Germany. In the UK, it stalled at No. 35 after 10 consecutive Top 20 singles. Over the ensuing years, Boney M. would employ the double A-side format, typically with the A1 song being the song intended for radio and the A2 song being more specifically targeted at discos. Typically, the sides on the coordinating 12" single would be reversed. Boney M
Boney M. is a German reggae, funk and disco music group founded in 1974. It achieved popularity during the disco era in the second half of the 1970s. The band was created by German record producer Frank Farian, who was the group's primary songwriter and singer. Originally based in West Germany, the four original members of the band's official line-up were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat, and Bobby Farrell from Aruba. Since the 1980s, various line-ups of the band have performed with different members. Oceans Of Fantasy
''Oceans of Fantasy'' is the fourth studio album by Euro-Caribbean group Boney M. Released in September 1979, ''Oceans of Fantasy'' became the second Boney M. album to top the UK charts and features the hits " El Lute / Gotta Go Home" and " I'm Born Again / Bahama Mama". Background The album had been preceded in the spring of 1979 by the single " Hooray! Hooray! It's a Holi-Holiday" (based on the American folksong " Polly Wolly Doodle"), one of the band's biggest hits. This was not included on ''Oceans of Fantasy'' but the B-side, "Ribbons of Blue" was, albeit in a heavily edited form. The original length of the track is 4:02, and songs like "Gotta Go Home" and "Bahama Mama" were also longer on 7" than on the actual album. As with the group's previous album, '' Nightflight to Venus'', the original Hansa Records pressings of the album also included a range of different edits of certain tracks. Frank Farian
Franz Reuther (18 July 1941 – 23 January 2024), known professionally as Frank Farian, was a German record producer and singer who founded the 1970s disco-pop group Boney M., the pop band No Mercy, and the pop band Milli Vanilli. He frequently created vocal groups in which the publicised members merely lip-synced to songs sung by session performers. Farian owned the record label MCI and several subsidiaries. Early life Farian was born in Kirn, Germany, on 18 July 1941. He and two siblings were raised by his mother, because his father was killed in World War II before his birth. He trained as a cook before discovering rock and roll, renaming himself Frank Farian, and forming a band called Frankie Boys Schatten. "My Friend Jack" is a psychedelic rock song released by the English freakbeat group The Smoke in 1967. It was included originally in their debut album ''It's Smoke Time'', and it was also included (among other compilation albums) in the collection ''Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond, 1964–1969'' (Rhino Entertainment, Rhino, 2001). It was credited to all four band members: Geoff Gill, Mal Luker, Zeke Lund and Mick Rowley. The song was later covered by Boney M. Background "My Friend Jack" was the only international hit by The Smoke. The song seems to suggest the use of psychedelic drugs (specifically LSD) in lines such as “My Friend Jack eats sugar lumps” and suggests traversing the world inside his mind (such as “Been on a voyage, across an ocean”). Elizabeth Rebecca Pemberton-Mitchell (born 12 July 1952) is a British singer, best known as one of the original singers of the 1970s disco and reggae band Boney M. Mitchell now lives in Reading, UK. Early life Mitchell was born in the parish of Clarendon, British Jamaica. At the age of eleven, Mitchell and her family emigrated to London, England, in 1963; her childhood home was in the district of Harlesden. By the end of the decade, she auditioned for ''Hair'' and eventually moved to West Berlin to join the German cast where she replaced Donna Summer. After ''Hair'', Mitchell joined the Les Humphries Singers for a few years and represented West Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest with the Ralph Siegel title "Sing Sang Song". It was the first single of their second album '' Love for Sale'' and their third consecutive chart-topper in (West) Germany.
