Zenith (magazine)
''zenith'' is an independent German-language magazine which focuses on the Arab and Islamic world. The magazine is published quarterly and addresses politics, economics, culture, and society in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia as well as the Muslim world more generally. History The magazine was founded by six students of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Hamburg in summer 1999 and was initially a non-profit project. The founders wanted to introduce new perspectives about the MENA region to the German media landscape, which had long been the preserve of a handful of specialists, such as Peter Scholl-Latour and Gerhard Konzelmann, and to challenge long-held stereotypes about the region. In the spring of 2000, the association "forum zenith e.V." was founded. The association was the official publisher of the magazine ''zenith'' until 2008. Daniel Gerlach
Daniel Gerlach (born 1977) is a German author, journalist, publisher and Middle East expert. He is the current editor-in-chief of the German Middle East quarterly magazine zenith and director-general of the Candid Foundation. Career Gerlach studied history and Middle Eastern studies. He holds a licence degree from the University of Paris IV Sorbonne and an M.A. from the University of Hamburg. In 1999 Gerlach co-founded and co-directed zenith Magazine. In 2012 he assumed the position of the magazine's editor in chief. Previously, he wrote as a freelance journalist for daily newspapers such as Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Die Welt and worked as a documentary filmmaker for national German television ZDF, mainly focusing on history and present of the Arab world. Bertelsmann Foundation
The Bertelsmann Stiftung is an independent foundation under private law, based in Gütersloh, Germany. It was founded in 1977 by Reinhard Mohn as the result of social, corporate and fiscal considerations. As the Bertelsmann Stiftung itself has put it, the foundation promotes "reform processes" and "the principles of entrepreneurial activity" to build a "future-oriented society." Since 1993, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has held the majority of capital shares in the Bertelsmann Group. ''Die Zeit'' (, "The Time") is a German national weekly newspaper published in Hamburg in Germany. The newspaper is generally considered to be among the German newspapers of record and is known for its long and extensive articles. History The first edition of ''Die Zeit'' was first published in Hamburg on 21 February 1946. The founding publishers were Gerd Bucerius, Lovis H. Lorenz, Richard Tüngel and Ewald Schmidt di Simoni. Deutschlandradio (DLR) (''Radio Germany'') is a national German public radio broadcaster. Asiem El Difraoui (Arabic: عبد العظيم حسن الدفراوي, DMG 'Abd al-'Aẓīm Ḥasan ad Difrāwī; born 5 April 1965) is a political scientist, economist, and documentary director and producer of Egyptian-German descent. He focuses primarily on topics related to the Arab world, and is widely considered as a leading expert on Arab media in general and jihadism internet propaganda in particular. Biography Asiem El Difraoui studied at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he earned a B.A. honours degree in political science and economics. In 1992 he acquired a DEA (French: Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies), an advanced post-graduate research degree comparable to the M.Phil., in political science from Sciences Po Paris (IEP).
