Zamorano
The Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School ( es, link=no, Escuela Agrícola Panamericana Zamorano), generally known as ''El Zamorano'' or ''Zamorano'', is a private, coeducational university located in the valley of the Yeguare river, Honduras. El Zamorano's main focus is agricultural and there are four different programs to choose from in the school. Enrollment stands at more than 1000 students. It is currently registered in Delaware as a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation. Wilson Popenoe
Frederick Wilson Popenoe (March 9, 1892 – June 20, 1975) was an American Department of Agriculture employee and plant explorer. From 1916 to 1924, Popenoe explored Latin America to look for new strains of avocados. He reported his adventures to the ''National Geographic Society''. He went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1913 and became the chief agronomist of the United Fruit Company in 1925. Career Popenoe attended Pomona College as a special student for one year. Afterwards, he worked for the United Fruit Company, where he became the first director of the Panamerican Agricultural School, Zamorano in Honduras. Popenoe won numerous awards and received three honorary doctorates, from: Universidad Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru; Pomona College; and the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Samuel Zemurray (born Schmuel Zmurri; January 18, 1877 – November 30, 1961), nicknamed "Sam the Banana Man", was an American businessman who made his fortune in the banana trade. He founded the Cuyamel Fruit Company and later became president of the United Fruit Company, the world's most influential fruit company at the time. Paul Bowman Popenoe (October 16, 1888 – June 19, 1979) was an American agricultural explorer and eugenicist. He was an influential advocate of the compulsory sterilization of mentally ill people and people with mental disabilities, and the father of marriage counseling in the United States. The 'Lancetilla' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in Honduras. History The original tree is believed to have been the result of a cross between the Saigon and Mulgoba varieties by Wilson Popenoe, grown on his property in Lancetilla on the north coast of Honduras. Lancetilla was introduced to the United States via South Florida and first received notoriety at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's 2001 mango festival. The tree was promoted as a dooryard variety in Florida due to its excellent disease resistance and flavor, and is now widely sold as nursery stock in the state.
