Zebina Lane
Zebina Bartholomew Lane was an Australian mining engineer and politician who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for the Metropolitan-Suburban Province from 11 September 1903 to 21 May 1908. He was also mayor of the Municipal District of Broken Hill in New South Wales from 11 February 1889 to 12 February 1890, and was the manager of several mines across New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Early life Lane was born at Moliagul, near Bendigo, Victoria, on 27 January 1856. His parents were Canadian-born mining engineer Zebina Lane and Irish-born Mary Kearney. Career At age 15, he managed a mine at St Arnaud, Victoria, later joining the Colonial Smelting Co. He moved to New Zealand, living there for eight years and working at the Hauraki goldfields. Coolgardie, Western Australia
Coolgardie is a small town in Western Australia, east of the state capital, Perth. It has a population of approximately 850 people. Although Coolgardie is now known to most Western Australians as a tourist town and a mining ghost town, it was once the third largest town in Western Australia (after Perth and Fremantle). At this time, mining of alluvial gold was a major industry and supplied the flagging economy with new hope. Many miners suffered under the harsh conditions, but for a few, their find made the hard work worthwhile. Most men, however, left poorer than they had started off, with their hopes dashed. Sydney Stubbs
Sydney Stubbs CMG (19 July 1861 – 30 July 1953) was an Australian politician who served twice in the Parliament of Western Australia: in the Legislative Council from 1908 to 1911, and then in the Legislative Assembly from 1911 to 1947. He was Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1930 to 1933, and had been Mayor of Claremont and then Mayor of Perth prior to entering parliament. He worked as a schoolteacher for a time in the late 1870s before securing a position with John Danks & Son, a hardware company with which he was employed from 1879 to 1894, working variously as a clerk, travelling salesman, and engineer.
