Zarjazz
Zarjazz was a record label and sub-label of Virgin Records. Zarjazz was formed in 1984 by Madness, a British ska band. The label's first release was Feargal Sharkey's hit single " Listen to Your Father", on which Madness (minus Suggs) performed as Sharkey's backing group. Zarjazz also achieved success with album and single releases by Madness themselves, and with the charity record 'Starvation' (credited as Starvation) featuring members of Madness, UB40, the Pioneers and General Public. The record label dissolved in 1986. Other Zarjazz artists were the Fink Brothers (Suggs and Chas Smash), Charm School, and Tom Morley. The label was run from an office on Caledonian Road in North London, which also houses Liquidator Studios. Madness still owns the studio, but currently rents the premises to Apollo 440. Listen To Your Father
"Listen to Your Father" is a song by the Northern Irish singer Feargal Sharkey, released as his standalone debut single on 1 October 1984. It was written by Carl Smyth, and produced by Sharkey and Liquidator Productions (i.e. the English ska and pop band Madness). The song reached No. 23 in the UK and No. 22 in Ireland. The B-side, "Can I Say I Love You", was written by Smyth and Sharkey. The single was the first to be released on Zarjazz, a sub-label of Virgin Records which had been formed that year by Madness. All members of Madness performed on the record minus lead vocalist Suggs. When "Listen to Your Father" became a hit, Sharkey left the label to sign with Virgin as Madness had not required him to sign a contract with their label. Feargal Sharkey
Seán Feargal Sharkey (born 13 August 1958) is a singer and environmentalist from Northern Ireland. He was the lead vocalist of punk band the Undertones in the 1970s and 1980s and a solo artist in the 1980s and 1990s. His 1985 solo single " A Good Heart" was a number-one hit in the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands. After becoming less musically active in the early 1990s, he has performed various roles supporting the UK's commercial music industry, winning several awards and honours for his work in that area. Sharkey is also a lifelong fly fisherman, has campaigned against the pollution of British rivers (particularly chalk streams), and is the Chairman of the Amwell Magna Fishery. He has become a figurehead for the campaign to prevent water companies dumping sewage into UK waterways and coasts. Starvation/Tam Tam Pour L'Ethiopie
"Starvation/Tam Tam Pour L'Ethiopie" is a double A-sided charity single released in 1985, and recorded by two charity ensembles formed specially for the occasion, also known as "Starvation" and "Tam Tam Pour L'Ethiopie" respectively. The aim was to raise money for the starving people of Ethiopia. The idea of gathering artists together to make a charity record was copied from Bob Geldof's Band Aid project, which was number one in the UK charts at the time Starvation/Tam Tam was recorded in December 1984. Band Aid was criticised by some for featuring very few black musicians, and none at all from Africa. The Starvation/Tam Tam record was meant to rectify this. Madness are an English ska and pop band from Camden Town, north west London, who formed in 1976. Virgin Records is a British record label owned by Universal Music Group. They were originally founded as a British independent record label in 1972 by entrepreneurs Richard Branson, Simon Draper, Nik Powell, and musician Tom Newman (musician), Tom Newman. Apollo 440
Apollo 440 (also known as Apollo Four Forty or @440) are an English electronic music group formed in Liverpool in 1990. The group have written, recorded and produced five studio albums, collaborated with and produced other artists, remixed as Apollo 440 and as their ambient cinematic alter ego Stealth Sonic Orchestra, and created music for film, television, advertisements and multimedia. They notched up ten UK top 40 singles with three top tens, and had a chart presence worldwide. The group's name comes from the Apollo program and the frequency of concert pitch—the A note at 440 Hz, often denoted as " A440"—and the Sequential Circuits sampler/sequencer, the Studio 440.
