You Can't Beat The Law
''You Can't Beat the Law'' is a 1943 American drama film directed by Phil Rosen; also known as ''Prison Mutiny'' (American TV title). Plot Johnny Gray (Edward Norris) is a self-proclaimed playboy. Gray's car is found at the scene of a crime; and although it's been stolen, it is enough to convict Gray of the holdup. Rico (Willy Castello) is the real criminal, but never becomes a suspect. Rico's gang members Creeper, Harry, and Red are also sent to jail with Gray. When Gray's fiancée even believes Johnny is guilty, he becomes angry and a difficult prisoner. Gray is eventually put in the same cell as Cain (Jack La Rue); who is the head of a gang that's planning a prison break. Frank Sanders ( Milburn Stone) is a new warden at the prison, and he eventually earns Gray's trust. Gray is transferred to different cell with a new cell-mate, and given the chance to work in the prison gardens. Phil Rosen
Philip E. Rosen (May 8, 1888 – October 22, 1951) was an American film director and cinematographer. He directed more than 140 films between 1915 and 1949. He was born in Malbork, Marienburg, German Empire (now, Malbork, Poland), grew up in Machias, Maine, and died in Hollywood, California of a heart attack. He was one of the founders of the American Society of Cinematographers. Rosen was married to model and actress Joyzelle Joyner. A monogram is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol. Monograms are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company, used as recognizable symbols or logos. Selmer Adolf Jackson (May 7, 1888 – March 30, 1971) was an American stage film and television actor. He appeared in nearly 400 films between 1921 and 1963. His name was sometimes spelled Selmar Jackson. Jackson was born in Lake Mills, Iowa and died in Burbank, California from a heart attack. Jackson gained early acting experience in stock theater, working with groups such as the Des Moines Stock Company. Jackson's screen debut was in the silent film ''The Supreme Passion'' (1921).
