Yorkshire Post Newspapers
Yorkshire Post Newspapers are publishers of the '' Yorkshire Post'' and ''Yorkshire Evening Post''. They were based at offices in Wellington Street, but in November 2012 they moved to Number 1 Leeds, Whitehall Road, where they took four floors in the managed building Leeds, West Yorkshire. They are ultimately owned by JPIMedia. The company was formed as "Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Company Limited" in 1865, and published the '' Leeds Intelligencer'' (founded 1754) for one year before it was renamed the ''Yorkshire Post''. The company acquired the ''Leeds Mercury'' in 1923 and merged it with the ''Yorkshire Post'' in 1939. The company was renamed "Yorkshire Post Newspapers" in 1969. The first chairman was William Beckett-Denison, from a Leeds banking family (Beckett's Bank was founded in 1774 and acquired by Westminster Bank in 1921). ''The Yorkshire Post'' is a daily broadsheet newspaper, published in Leeds in Yorkshire, England. It primarily covers stories from Yorkshire although its masthead carries the slogan "Yorkshire's National Newspaper". It was previously owned by Johnston Press and is now owned by JPIMedia. Founded in 1754, it is one of the oldest newspapers in the country. Editions are available throughout the United Kingdom with offices across Yorkshire in Harrogate, Hull, Scarborough, Sheffield and York, as well as correspondents in Westminster and the City of London. Yorkshire Evening Post
The ''Yorkshire Evening Post'' is a daily evening publication (delivered to newsagents every morning) published by Yorkshire Post Newspapers in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The paper provides a regional slant on the day's news, and traditionally provides close reporting on Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos as well as the Yorkshire County Cricket Club team. The newspaper generally takes a liberal/centre left position. Despite its title that implies the paper is Yorkshire wide it is a Leeds-based paper, still widely circulated in Bradford, Harrogate, Huddersfield and Wakefield as well. The City of Leeds has two further widely circulated local papers, being the ''Wetherby News'' and the '' Wharfedale and Airedale Observer''. Leeds
Leeds () is a city and the administrative centre of the City of Leeds district in West Yorkshire, England. It is built around the River Aire and is in the eastern foothills of the Pennines. It is also the third-largest settlement (by population) in England, after London and Birmingham. The city was a small manorial borough in the 13th century and a market town in the 16th century. West Yorkshire is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in the Yorkshire and Humber Region of England. It is an inland and upland county having eastward-draining valleys while taking in the moors of the Pennines. Leeds Intelligencer
The ''Leeds Intelligencer'', or ''Leedes Intelligencer'', was one of the first regional newspapers in Great Britain. It was founded in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1754 and first published on 2 July 1754. It was a weekly paper until it was renamed and became the daily ''Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer'', first published on Monday 2 July 1866, until 1883 when the "and Leeds Intelligencer" was dropped from the title. It was published under the motto of ''The Altar, the Throne and the Cottage'' and was, from the outset, a conservative newspaper. It dropped the extra 'e' from the name ''Leedes'' in 1765 and was recognised as being anti-Catholic and being opposed to Chartism. Leeds Mercury
The ''Leeds Mercury'' was a newspaper published in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was published from 1718 to 1755 and again from 1767. Initially it consisted of 12 pages and cost three halfpennies. In 1794 it had a circulation of about 3,000 copies, and in 1797 the cost rose to sixpence because of increased stamp duty. It appeared weekly until 1855, then three times a week until 1861 when stamp duty was abolished and it became a daily paper costing one penny. Edward Baines (1774–1848) bought the paper in 1801, and his son Sir Edward Baines (1800–1890) succeeded him as editor and proprietor. William Beckett-Denison
William Beckett-Denison (10 September 1826 – 23 November 1890) was an English banker and Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons in two periods between 1876 and 1890. He died when he fell under a train. Early life Born William Beckett on 10 September 1826, he was the third and second surviving son of Sir Edmund Beckett, 4th Baronet, of Grimthorpe, Yorkshire, and his wife Maria Beverley, daughter of William Beverley of Beverley. He was educated at the Rugby School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Career In 1847, at twenty-one, he joined his father's banking firm of Beckett & Co. He later made partner and, in 1874, was made head of the firm at Leeds, Doncaster and Retford. William Denholm Barnetson, Baron Barnetson (born 21 March 1917, Edinburgh – 12 March 1981, Westminster, London) was a newspaper proprietor and television executive. Early life and education He was educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, and Edinburgh University.
