Yama Yama Man
"The Yama Yama Man" was a comical song for the Broadway show ''The Three Twins'', published in 1908 by M. Witmark & Sons with music by Karl Hoschna and lyrics by Collin Davis. It became popular after Bessie McCoy's animated performance in a satin Pierrot clown costume with floppy gloves and a cone hat. At age 20, she became an overnight sensation on Broadway and was known thereafter as the "Yama Yama Girl"; it became her lifelong theme song. The show ran for 288 performances. The lyrics contain topical references of the era such as street cars and ladies' fashion while the refrain is about a comical bogeyman—the Yama Yama Man—who is "ready to spring out at you unaware". A show tune is a song originally written as part of the score of a work of musical theatre or musical film, especially if the piece in question has become a standard, more or less detached in most people's minds from the original context. Though show tunes vary in style, they do tend to share common characteristics—they usually fit the context of a story being told in the original musical, they are useful in enhancing and heightening choice moments. A particularly common form of show tune is the "I Want" song, which composer Stephen Schwartz noted as being particularly likely to have a lifespan outside the show that spawned it. Nell Brinkley
Nell Brinkley (September 5, 1886 – October 21, 1944) was an American illustrator and comic artist who was sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Comics" during her nearly four-decade career working with New York newspapers and magazines. She was the creator of the Brinkley Girl, a stylish character who appeared in her comics and became a popular symbol in songs, films and theater. Grace Duffie Boylan (February 9, 1861 – March 24, 1935) was an American writer. She wrote many children's books, often dealing with diverse races and cultures, like ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' (not to be confounded with the same title by Harriet Beecher Stowe). Other titles include: ''Young Folks'', ''Our Little Eskimo Kiddies: Kids of Many Colors'', '' Yama Yama Land'', and ''Our Little Cuban Kiddies''. Vernon Castle
Vernon and Irene Castle were a husband-and-wife team of ballroom dancers and dance teachers who appeared on Broadway and in silent films in the early 20th century. Stanley Kirkby (born James Baker; 1878 – 30 October 1949) was an English baritone singer and Variety Show, variety artist of the early 20th century.
