YCO Painters
The YCO Painters were the multi-titled Filipino basketball team of the YCO Athletic Club that was active from the late 1940s to 1981 in the now-defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA). YCO Athletic Club was founded by businessman and sportsman Manuel “Manolo” Elizalde and owned under his company Elizalde & Co., Inc., manufacturers of YCO floor wax and paints. The Painters were known as the first basketball dynasty in the Philippines, having dominated MICAA and BAP tournaments during the 1950s to early 1960s. The team's most famous player was Carlos Loyzaga, considered as the greatest Filipino basketball player of his time. Manila Industrial And Commercial Athletic Association
The Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) was a sports association which existed in Manila, Philippines from 1938 to 1981. Throughout its existence, it staged various sports and was participated by prominent Philippine companies. After World War II, its basketball tournament became the country's premier basketball league until 1975, when nine of its members broke away to form the very first professional basketball league in Asia, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Afterwards, it would continue as a farm league of sorts for the PBA until the league closed down before the end of 1981. Emilio Achacoso
Emilio Achacoso (born 17 May 1932) is a Filipino former basketball player who competed in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Basketball career Jun Achacoso was tops in his senior year at Mapua in 1954. He was named alternate in the 1954 Asian Games held in Manila but he was allowed to play a few games. His showing in the NCAA made coach Herr Silva field Jun in some games during the tournament. Right after he got his degree in Business Administration, he worked at the Development Bank and played with the Republic Supermarket Greyhounds in the MICAA. After an indefinite suspension from the PAAF for accepting to play for the Chinese Black and White team in an Asian tour without permission was lifted in 1956, Jun went to play for the Philippine Air Lines in the MICAA. Frankie Lim
Francisco "Frankie" Lim (born February 29, 1960) is a Filipino former basketball player, basketball coach and executive. He played 15 seasons in the PBA. He later became a successful coach, leading his alma mater San Beda Red Lions to four NCAA seniors titles. Lim is currently the coach of the NLEX Road Warriors. Playing career Lim played collegiate ball at San Beda College where he was a member of the last championship team that won the NCAA crown in 1978 (it was then followed by a 28-year title drought that ended in 2006). While in the amateur ranks, he suited up for YCO Painters in the old MICAA, which was then coached by Freddie Webb. Robert Vincent Salazar Jaworski Sr. (; born March 8, 1946) is a Filipino former professional basketball player, head coach and politician who served as a Senator of the Philippines from 1998 to 2004. Rafael "Paing" Hechanova Sr. (July 8, 1928 – August 26, 2021) was a Filipino basketball player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics. Early life Rafael "Paing" Hechanova was born on July 8, 1928 in the then-city of Jaro in Iloilo province. Career Playing career Shortly after World War II, Hechanova played varsity basketball for the University of Santo Tomas's (UST) Glowing Goldies under coach Herminio Silva in the UAAP. Antonio Genato
Antonio "Tony" Genato (born June 9, 1929) is a retired Filipino basketball player who competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics, the 1956 Summer Olympics and at the 1954 FIBA World Championship. Biography Genato had his high school education at the San Beda College. He did not play competitive basketball during his high school years due to a lack of competitions during the war years. Genato took his pre-med studies also in San Beda. He played three seasons for the San Beda Red Lions in the NCAA. After finishing his pre-med studies at San Beda, Genato took a course in Medicine at the University of Santo Tomas and joined the YCO in 1952. Genato joined the YCO Athletic Club in 1952. Danny Florencio
Danilo Zoleta Florencio (September 5, 1947 – February 25, 2018) was a Filipino professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. He was known as "Daredevil Danny" and the original "Skywalker" in Philippine basketball. Collegiate/Amateur Career Florencio played for the UST Glowing Goldies from 1965–1967. After he left UST, joined the national team soon after, and became a member of the RP Team that finished second in the 1971 ABC Championships in Tokyo, which earned them a berth in the 1972 Munich Olympics. Ricardo Cleofas
Ricardo "Joy" B. Cleofas (born February 9, 1951) is a Filipino retired basketball player. Cleofas played college ball for the Ateneo de Manila University under coach Nilo Verona. He led Ateneo to a runner-up finish in his first year together with Marte Samson. The Blue Eagles became NCAA champions in 1969 and among his teammates were Samson, Chito Afable, Jun Ross and Francis Arnaiz. After college, he played in the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association for the YCO Painters. That same year, YCO garnered the National Seniors and Panamin tournament. Ely Capacio
Eliezer "Ely" O. Capacio (March 14, 1955 – February 23, 2014) was a Filipino basketball player, coach and executive. Born in Palo, Leyte, Philippines, he played a total of eight seasons as a forward-center for the Tanduay Rhum Makers from 1979 to 1986, averaging 5.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in a total of 324 games. The team won two championships during the 1986 PBA season. His younger brother, Glenn Capacio also played in the PBA.
