Yazz
Yazz (born Yasmin Evans; 19 May 1960) is a British pop singer, who remains perhaps best known for her 1988 UK number one single " The Only Way Is Up". Some of her records are credited to Yazz and the Plastic Population. Career Yazz was born in Shepherd's Bush, London, to a Jamaican father and a British mother. She attended Holland Park School, where she excelled at sports, including the 400 metres. She was also a member of the England under-19 volleyball team. Following a spell as a catwalk model, she scored a number of club hits after recording with the group the Biz in 1983. Her first commercial success came in early 1988, when she sang on Coldcut's " Doctorin' the House". She soon launched a solo career on Big Life records, a label set up by her husband Jazz Summers, releasing her debut solo single, " The Only Way Is Up", in the summer of 1988. "The Only Way Is Up" is a song written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson and originally released in 1980 as a single by American soul singer Otis Clay. In 1988, it became a chart-topping single in the United Kingdom for Yazz and the Plastic Population. The song is used as the theme tune to the popular ITV2/ITVBe reality television series '' The Only Way Is Essex''. Otis Clay version The song was written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson. It was first recorded by Otis Clay and released as a single by Echo Records in 1980. ''Wanted'' is the debut album by British pop singer Yazz, released in 1988. It contains the single "The Only Way Is Up", which reached number one in six countries. ''Wanted'' was certified double platinum in the UK in September 1989, for sales exceeding 600,000 copies. A three-CD remastered deluxe edition, containing the original album plus B-sides, remixes and Yazz's 1990 non-album single "Treat Me Good", was released on Cherry Red Records on 25 November 2016. ''One on One'' is the second studio album by British pop singer Yazz. The album was released in April 1994, more than five years after her debut album, '' Wanted''. The album contains the UK top 40 hit single " How Long", a duet with Aswad. Background Yazz commenced recording sessions for a second album with Big Life Records in 1989, as the follow-up to ''Wanted''. Following the release of the "Treat Me Good" single (UK No. 20, SUI No. 28, NED No. 48, GER No. 55, AUS No. 100) in June 1990, an album titled ''Revolution of Love'' was scheduled for release, but was ultimately shelved when Yazz parted with the record company. Following the release of Yazz's first single with Polydor Records in March 1992, "One True Woman" (UK No. 60), an album of the same name was planned for release in May 1992, but was cancelled. "How Long" is the debut single by the English band Ace, from their 1974 debut album, '' Five-A-Side''. It reached No. 3 on both the US and Canadian charts, and No. 20 on the UK Singles Chart. Gordon "Jazz" Summers (15 March 1944 – 14 August 2015) was a British music manager. He managed acts such as Snow Patrol, the Verve, Scissor Sisters and Klaxons. Alongside Simon Napier-Bell, he co-managed Wham! and is credited with having enabled them to break into the United States market in 1985 and to go on to become the first western pop group to tour China. Aswad are a British reggae group, noted for adding strong R&B and soul influences to the reggae sound. They have been performing since the mid-1970s, having released a total of 21 albums. Their UK hit singles include the number one "Don't Turn Around" (1988) and " Shine" (1994). "Aswad" is Arabic for "black". They are three-time Grammy Award nominees.
