Yabus River
The Yabus River (or Khor Yabus) rises in the far west of Ethiopia, in Asosa Zone, flows west into Sudan past the town of Yabus, then enters South Sudan. At the town of Bunj it turns south west and enters the Machar Marshes, page 112 where it loses its identity. The river is sometimes confused with the Dabus River, a tributary of the Blue Nile, also known as the Yabus River. The sources of the two rivers are close to each other. South Sudan
South Sudan (; din, Paguot Thudän), officially the Republic of South Sudan ( din, Paankɔc Cuëny Thudän), is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia, Sudan, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Kenya. Its population was estimated as 12,778,250 in 2019. Juba is the capital and largest city. It gained independence from Sudan on 9 July 2011, making it the most recent sovereign state or country with widespread recognition as of 2022. Asosa Zone
Assosa is a zone in Benishangul-Gumuz Region of Ethiopia. This Zone was named after the Assosa Sultanate, which had approximately the same boundaries. Assosa is bordered on the south by the Mao-Komo special woreda, on the west by Sudan, and on the northeast by the Kamashi. The largest town in this zone is Assosa. Its highest point is Mount Bambasi, located in the woreda of the same name. The majority ethnic group in the zone is the Berta people. The area Assosa occupies came under Ethiopian control in 1898, when Emperor Menelik II skillfully exploited the traditional rivalry of the three local rulers, Sheikh Ejail al-Hassan of Asosa, Sheikh Mahmud of Komosha and Sheikh Abd al-Rahman Al-Ejail of Bela-Shangul proper. Yabus
Yabus is a town in Blue Nile State in south-eastern Sudan near the borders with Ethiopia and South Sudan. It lies on the Yabus River. Yabus is linked by road to Kurmuk some 80 km to the north, but the road is only passable in the dry season. There is an airport at Yabus. A number of humanitarian agencies have been active in Yabus, including GOAL (of Ireland), ROOF (Relief Organization of Fazugli, Nairobi), CEAS (Church Ecumenical Action in Sudan) and SIM (Serving In Mission). Machar Marshes
The Machar Marshes are a large area of wetlands in the state of Upper Nile, South Sudan. Estimates of their size vary. A 1950 study put the area of swamp at 6,500 km2. A 1980 study put the area of permanent swamp at 8,700 km2., 60% of which was grass and forest.Sutcliffe and Parks, p.113 The marshes are fed by waters from the Khor Machar (a distributary of the Baro River), the Yabus River and the Daga River. Dabus River
The Dabus River is a north-flowing tributary of the Abay River in southwestern Ethiopia; it joins its parent stream at . The Dabus has a drainage area of about 21,032 square kilometers. This river was formerly known as the Yabus, and local speakers still refer to it by that name, without distinction for the Yabus in Sudan that is a tributary of the White Nile. Juan Maria Schuver was the first European explorer to determine that they were two separate rivers, and in 1882 proved false the rumor that these rivers flowed from the same mountain lake.
