YPJ (rapper)
The Women's Protection Units (YPJ) or Women's Defense Units is an all-female militia involved in the Syrian civil war. The YPJ is part of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the armed forces of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, and is closely affiliated with the male-led YPG. While the YPJ is mainly made up of Kurds, it also includes women from other ethnic groups in Northern Syria. History Women have been involved in Syrian Kurdish Resistance fighting since as early as 2011, when the mixed-sex YXG was founded, later to be renamed YPG in 2012. The YPJ was founded as a strictly women's organization on 4 April 2013 with the first battalion formed in Jindires and later expanded its activities towards the Kobane and Jazira cantons. Nesrin Abdullah
Nesrin Abdullah is a commander and spokesperson for the Kurdish militia group YPJ (Women's Protection Unit) in Syria. She has been active in communicating the progress of the Kurdish and Syrian Democratic Forces operation to liberate Raqqa from ISIS. She was born in Al-Malikiyah of Al-Hasakah Governorate. She has been involved in the women's defense organization as early in 2011 and in April 2013 she announced the establishment of the YPJ. In 2015 she was part of a delegation of the YPG/J who met with French President Francois Hollande in Paris. She has also stated that she believes that Turkey was involved in the massacre of civilians in Kobanê in 2014 by ISIS. She made the statement while part of a Kurdish delegation that included PYD Co-president Salih Müslim and Kobanê Canton Administration Co-president Enver Müslim to Italy on 23 July 2015. Eastern Al-Hasakah Offensive
The Eastern al-Hasakah offensive was launched in the Al-Hasakah Governorate during the Syrian Civil War, by the Kurdish-majority People's Protection Units, Assyrian militias, and allied Arab forces against the jihadist Islamic State (ISIL or ISIS), with the intent of retaking the areas of the Jazira Canton that had been captured by ISIL. Operation Olive Branch () was an invasion by the Turkish Armed Forces and Syrian National Army (SNA) in the Kurdish-majority Afrin District of northwest Syria, against the People's Protection Units (YPG) of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
