XXL (album)
''XXL'' is the second studio album by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, released on September 23, 2003. It includes guest performances by saxophonist Michael Brecker, vocal group Take 6, clarinetist Eddie Daniels, and singer Johnny Mathis. ''XXL'' was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Gordon Goodwin received two more nominations, one for Best Instrumental Composition ("Hunting Wabbits") and one for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist ("Comes Love"). Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, or simply The Big Phat Band, is an 18-piece jazz orchestra that combines the big band swing of the 1930s and 1940s with contemporary music such as funk and jazz fusion. The band is led by Gordon Goodwin, who arranges, composes, plays piano and saxophone. Since its origin, the Big Phat Band has received several Grammy Awards and many Grammy nominations. Its first album, '' Swingin' for the Fences'', was the first recording released on DVD-Audio and the first DVD-Audio to be nominated for two Grammy Awards. When he founded the Big Phat Band in 1999, Goodwin was working in Hollywood as a composer for Warner Brothers cartoons. Let The Good Times Roll (Louis Jordan Song)
"Let the Good Times Roll" is a jump blues song recorded in 1946 by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. A mid-tempo twelve-bar blues, the song became a blues standard and one of Jordan's best-known songs. Composition "Let the Good Times Roll" is "Louis Jordan's buoyant invitation to party": The song was written by Sam Theard, a New Orleans-born blues singer and songwriter, and was co-credited to Fleecie Moore, Jordan's wife. Theard first showed Jordan the song in 1942, while playing in Chicago clubs. The tune developed over the years until Jordan recorded it in New York City in June 1946. Charts and recognition "Let the Good Times Roll" reached number two in the Billboard R&B chart in 1947. Its flip side, " Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens", was the top number one record of 1947 — both songs spent nearly six months on the chart. Bernie Grundman is an American audio engineer. He is most known for his mastering work and his studio, Bernie Grundman Mastering, which he opened in 1984 in Hollywood. The studio, which includes engineers Chris Bellman, Patricia Sullivan, and Mike Bozzi, mastered 37 projects which received Grammy Award nominations in 2005. In 1997 he opened a studio in Tokyo. Jeff Dean (musician)
Jeff Dean is a punk rock musician and recording engineer based in Chicago, Illinois. He is best known for playing guitar in The Bomb with Jeff Pezzati of Naked Raygun, and Noise By Numbers with Dan Vapid of The Methadones. He currently plays in Deep Tunnel Project. In addition to these bands, he is lead guitarist for All Eyes West, Explode and Make Up, and Dead Ending. Dean has also played in Tomorrows Gone, Cleon's Down, Yesterday's Heroes, Zero in Trust, The Story So Far, Four Star Alarm and Certain People I Know. Peter Erskine
Peter Erskine (born June 5, 1954) is an American jazz drummer who was a member of the jazz fusion groups Weather Report and Steps Ahead. Early life and education Erskine was born in Somers Point, New Jersey, U.S. He began playing the drums at the age of four. He graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, then studied percussion at Indiana University. Career His professional music career started in 1972 when he joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra. After three years with Kenton, he joined Maynard Ferguson for two years. In 1978, he joined Weather Report, joining Jaco Pastorius in the rhythm section. Luis Conte (born 16 November 1954) is a Cuban percussionist best-known for his performances in the bands of artists including James Taylor, Madonna, Pat Metheny Group, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart and Shakira. Grant Geissman
Grant Geissman (born April 13, 1953) is an American jazz guitarist and Emmy-nominated composer. He has recorded extensively for several labels since 1976 and played guitar on the theme for ''Monk'' and other TV series. Career Geissman was born in Berkeley, California and grew up in San Jose. When he was 11 years old, Geissman began his first guitar lesson with his private teacher Mrs. Allen. Eric Marienthal (born December 19, 1957) is a Grammy Award-nominated Los Angeles-based contemporary saxophonist best known for his work in the jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz, and pop genres. Early life Eric Marienthal was born on December 19, 1957 in Sacramento, California to Robert Marienthal, an insurance salesman, but moved to San Mateo when he was two years old. He has credited his enthusiasm for music on being taught music while in school, and picked up the saxophone in the fourth grade after he thought it looked "pretty cool". Andy Martin is an American jazz trombonist and Los Angeles studio player. He is a member of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and was the featured soloist with Bill Holman big band for 15 years and has been in Tom Kubis' big band since its inception. Career In addition to being a top jazz soloist, Martin has played in over 350 major motion pictures, including the trombone solo in the opening credits of '' Monsters, Inc.''and played the trombone solos in the movie ''La La Land'' and ''The Secret Life of Pets''.
