World Record Progression 4 × 100 Metres Medley Relay
This article includes the world record progression for the 4×100 metres medley relay, and it shows the chronological history of world record times in that competitive swimming event. The 4×100 metres medley relay is a medley race in which each of four swimmers on a team swims a 100-metre leg of the relay, each swimming a different stroke, in the following sequence: # Backstroke (this can only be the first stroke, due to the necessity of starting this leg in the pool rather than by diving in); # Breaststroke; # Butterfly; # Freestyle ("freestyle" means any stroke other than backstroke, breaststroke or butterfly – most swimmers use the front crawl). Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. A medley relay consists of four swimmers who will each swim a different stroke, ordered as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Swimming each stroke requires a set of specific techniques; in competition, there are distinct regulations concerning the acceptable form for each individual stroke. Viktor Solovyov (russian: Виктор Соловьёв; born 1932) is a retired Russian competitive swimmer. Solovyov competed at the 1952 Summer Olympics in the 100 m backstroke Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. Lev Balandin
Lev Nikolayevich Balandin (russian: Лев Николаевич Баландин; 1934–1980) was a Soviet swimmer who won two medals at the 1954 European Aquatics Championships. He also competed at the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics in three freestyle events, but was eliminated in prelinaries. During his career he set four world records and seven European records in relay events. He also won 10 national titles in the 4 × 200 m freestyle (1951–1954), 4 × 100 m medley (1953–1955) and 100 m freestyle (1954–1956). Balandin was born in Nizhny Novgorod but in the early 1950s moved to Moscow. He was married to Ida Petrovna Balandina (1931–2001) who was also a competitive swimmer. Balandin died in 1980 in Moscow.
