Wink-Loving Independent School District
Wink-Loving Independent School District is a public school district based in Wink, Texas, United States in Winkler County, Texas. The district serves students in southern and western Winkler County along with all of Loving County. Wink-Loving ISD was established in 1928 and in the following year built a two-story Jr/High School with a mission revival styling designed by the Butler Company of Lubbock, Tx. In 1948 WLISD built a Band Hall and Cafeteria (now administrative building). In 1959 they built an Elementary School. In 1962 WLISD built a gym and pool building. Due to Loving County's school district enrollment falling to two students, it was incorporated with Wink County's school district. In 1978 WLISD extended the Elementary School. In 1981 added a physical fitness center then 1982 built a new cafeteria and remodeled the old 1948 cafeteria turning it into the administration building. Wink is a city in Winkler County, Texas, United States. The population was 940 at the 2010 census. Wink was a temporary childhood home to singer and songwriter Roy Orbison, although he was born in Vernon, Texas. Winkler County, Texas
Winkler County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 7,791. Its county seat is Kermit. The county was created in 1887 and organized in 1910. It is named for Clinton McKamy Winkler, a colonel in the Confederate Army. History The first people to live in the area of Winkler County were the Anasazi Indians, who migrated there about 900 AD and left their discarded pottery as evidence of their presence. These Native Americans were attracted to the area by its water, which was readily available from the interdunal ponds or from digging through to the shallow water table. Loving County, Texas
Loving County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. With a population of 64 per the 2020 census, it is the least-populous county in the United States. Its county seat and only community is Mentone. The county was originally created in 1887, and after being disorganized in 1897, was reorganized in 1931. History Nomadic hunters inhabited the area during prehistory. Antonio de Espejo traveled in the area in 1583, and crossed the Pecos River. Immigrants used a ford, later named Pope's Crossing, for travel in the 1840s. John Pope surveyed the area in 1854, for the building of a transcontinental railroad. He created a camp in 1855, and conducted three drilling attempts, but only found water once and was unable to access it. Andrew A. Humphreys ordered Pope to end his drilling and abandon the camp on July 10, 1858. Soldiers were stationed at the camp created by Pope from 1858 to 1861.
