William Robert Mustoe
William Robert Mustoe (June 1878 – 22 July 1942) was a Kew-trained English gardener and landscaper involved in the layout of gardens and avenues best known for his work in planning the gardens and avenues of the new capital city of Delhi, working in association with the architect Edwin Lutyens. Mustoe was born in Leckhampton, where his father was a gardener. Following the family trade, he trained in horticulture at Dicksons nursery in Chester and then for private estate owners. He gained an interest in tropical plants after working in glasshouses at Sundridge Park of Sir Samuel Scott and in 1903 he applied for a position at the Kew glasshouses. Older than most applicants, he was accepted in 1904 and was recommended by Sir William Thiselton-Dyer in the next year for a vacancy in northern India. Kew Gardens
Kew Gardens is a botanic garden in southwest London that houses the "largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world". Founded in 1840, from the exotic garden at Kew Park, its living collections include some of the 27,000 taxa curated by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, while the herbarium, one of the largest in the world, has over preserved plant and fungal specimens. The library contains more than 750,000 volumes, and the illustrations collection contains more than 175,000 prints and drawings of plants. It is one of London's top tourist attractions and is a World Heritage Site.
