William Drummond (footballer)
William Roy Sharp Drummond (18 October 1890–15 December 1966), known as 'Roy', was an Australian rules footballer for the Port Adelaide Football Club. Family The son of Andrew Drummond (1849–1926), and Nancy Jane Drummond (1853–1919), née Brookes, William Roy Sharp Drummond was born at Semaphore, South Australia on 18 October 1890. He married Edith May Williams (1892–1949) on 18 August 1919. He is the grandfather of Olympic basketballer Phil Smyth. Military Medal William Drummond was awarded a Military Medal during World War I. He was awarded the medal for, as records state, taking '"control of his platoon (in battle at Hamel near Amiens on 7 July 1918) after almost all other non-commissioned officers were killed. Semaphore, South Australia
Semaphore is a northwestern suburb of Adelaide in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located on the Gulf St Vincent coastline of the Lefevre Peninsula about from the Adelaide city centre. History Semaphore was first surveyed for sale in 1849, at which time it was isolated by swamps to the south and the Port River to the east. In 1851, George Coppin, a prominent publican, theatrical entrepreneur and actor, built a two-storeyed timber hotel on the southern corner of The Esplanade and Blackler Street. A very high flagpole was erected to signal to his "White Horse Cellars" hotel at Port Adelaide the approach of ships, earning the area the name Semaphore, often called "The Semaphore". Largs Bay is a suburb in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Lefevre Peninsula in the west of Adelaide about northwest of the Adelaide city centre. The Championship of Australia was an Australian rules football tournament which was contested between football clubs from the Victorian, South Australian, Western Australian and Tasmanian football leagues. The Championship took place three times in the 19th century and then from 1907 to 1914—with the exception of 1912—and every year from 1968 to 1975. Phil Smyth
Philip John Smyth AM (born 11 May 1958) is an Australian former professional basketball player and coach. He won three National Basketball League (NBL) championships with the Canberra Cannons before going on to be a three-time championship-winning head coach of the NBL's Adelaide 36ers. Smyth was a four-time Olympian with the Australian national basketball team. Professional career Smyth, an Adelaide junior, was already seen as one of Australia's best point guards when the National Basketball League first started in 1979, yet it took him until 1982 to actually play in the league, despite having represented Australia at the 1978 FIBA World Championship in the Philippines and at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. 1916 Pioneer Exhibition Game
On Saturday 28 October 1916, the former Olympic champion swimmer and the later Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Lieutenant Frank Beaurepaire, organised an Australian Rules football match in aid of the British and the French Red Cross. Promoted as the ''Pioneer Exhibition Game of Australian Football in London'', and "believed to be the first exhibition of Australian football in London" (de Lacy, 1949), the match was contested between two teams of Australian servicemen who were stationed in the UK the ''Australian Training Units Team'' and the ''Third Australian Divisional Team'' all of whom were highly skilled footballers, and the majority of which had already played senior football in their respective states prior to their enlistment.
