William Christie (Ulster Politician)
Sir William Christie (1 June 1913 – 10 August 2008) was an Ulster Unionist Party, Ulster Unionist politician who served as Lord Mayor of Belfast. The owner of a wallpaper company in Belfast, Christie was Lord Mayor of Belfast between 1972 and 1975. During this time his home and business were attacked several times, and his wife survived a gunshot to the head in 1972. His time in office coincided with the suspension of the Parliament of Northern Ireland, and he was therefore the first Lord Mayor since John Campbell White (Irish politician), John White in 1920 not to serve as an ''ex officio'' member of the Senate of Northern Ireland, Senate. In the 1973 elections to Belfast City Council Christie stood in the north-west Belfast Area E, Belfast 'E' division (equivalent to the current wards of Legoniel, Ballysillan, Ardoyne, Woodvale Ward, Belfast, Woodvale, Forthriver and Ballygomartin), which elected 6 councillors. Burke's Peerage Limited is a British genealogical publisher founded in 1826, when the Irish genealogist John Burke began releasing books devoted to the ancestry and heraldry of the peerage, baronetage, knightage and landed gentry of Great Britain and Ireland. William Bradshaw Bell, OBE, JP (9 October 1935 – 9 June 2020), was an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician from Northern Ireland, and a former Lord Mayor of Belfast. Bell was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Lagan Valley from 1998 to 2007. He served as a Councillor on Belfast City Council from 1976 to 1985 and was Lord Mayor of Belfast from 1979 to 1980. Sir Raymond Evelyn "Myles" Humphreys (24 March 1925 – 22 February 1998) was a Northern Irish Ulster Unionist Party politician and activist, and an engineer and businessman. Joseph Foster Cairns (27 June 1920 – 2 May 1981) was a unionist politician in Northern Ireland. Cairns was the managing director of a furniture retailer, and chairman of a development company. He was elected to the Belfast Corporation for the Ulster Unionist Party, and served as Lord Mayor of Belfast from 1969 to 1972. High Sheriff Of Belfast
The High Sheriff of Belfast is a title and position which was created in 1900 under the Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898, with Sir James Henderson the first holder. Like other high sheriff positions, it is largely a ceremonial post today. The current high sheriff is Councillor John Hussey of the Democratic Unionist Party, who took office in 2022. The high sheriff is theoretically the judicial representative of the King in the city, while the Lord Lieutenant of Belfast is the Sovereign's personal representative. Today, the office is now largely symbolic with few formal duties other than deputising for the Lord Mayor of Belfast at official events. Irish Nationalists and Republican council members generally do not allow their names to go forward for the nomination as the post is seen as a reflection of the city's imperialist past. Woodvale Ward, Belfast
Court is one of the ten district electoral areas (DEA) in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Located in the north and west of the city, the district elects six members to Belfast City Council and contains the wards of Ballygomartin, Clonard, Falls, Forth River, Shankill, and Woodvale. Court is split between the Belfast North and Belfast West constituencies for the Northern Ireland Assembly and UK Parliament. History The DEA was created for the 1985 local elections.
