Willem Jacobszoon Coster
Willem Jacobszoon Coster ( – 21 August 1640) was a Dutch colonial governor who served as the first Governor of Dutch Ceylon from 13 March until 17 August 1640. He was succeeded by Jan Thyszoon Payart. Ceylon In 1637, the King of Kandy, Rajasingha II, approached the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for military support against the Portuguese occupiers. Admiral Adam Westerwolt was sent to help the king to capture Fort Batticaloa. Coster had arrived in Trincomalee in April 1638, which was already in Dutch hands, and sailed for Batticaloa with three ships and 180 men, where he awaited Westerwolt's arrival. The admiral arrived with four ships on May 10, while the troops of the king arrived the next day from inland. On 14 May, the Portuguese surrendered the fort and were deported to the Coromandel Coast. Jan Thyszoon Payart was a Dutch statesman and administrator who served as Governor of Zeylan (Dutch Ceylon) during the early Dutch period in Ceylon. He was appointed on 1 August 1640 and was Governor until 24 March 1646. He was succeeded by Joan Maetsuycker Joan Maetsuycker (14 October 1606 – 24 January 1678) was the Governor of Zeylan during the Dutch period in Ceylon and Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1653 to 1678. Batticaloa ( ta, மட்டக்களப்பு, ''Maṭṭakkaḷappu''; si, මඩකලපුව, ''Maḍakalapuwa'') is a major city in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, and its former capital. Governor Of Portuguese Ceylon
The Portuguese arrived in the Kingdom of Kotte in 1505. By 1594 they had appointed a captain-general to control the Portuguese occupied territory called Portuguese Ceylon on the island of modern-day Sri Lanka.
