Western Manitoba
The Westman Region (also known as Western Manitoba or simply Westman) is an informal geographic region of the Canadian province of Manitoba located in the southwestern corner of the province. Brandon is the largest urban centre in the Westman Region. Primary economic industries in the region include agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, education, petroleum, transportation, and tourism. Riding Mountain National Park and eight provincial parks are located within the Westman Region. Together with the Parkland Region to the north, Westman composes the broader Prairie Mountain health region, and is provided healthcare services by Prairie Mountain Health. As of 2016, the Westman Region had a population of 113,618 people, making it the most populous area of Manitoba outside of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region. Virden, Manitoba
Virden is a town in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Oil was first discovered in 1951, and Virden has since come to be known as the "Oil Capital of Manitoba". History Virden has its roots as a farming community known as Gopher Creek. However, it became a railway tent town in 1882, and grew in population due to the brick and flour industry, as well as with the discovery of oil in the 1950s. The origin of the name, Virden, allegedly arose as a misspelling of the German town Verden in the homeland of the 7th Duke of Manchester's wife, Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Rural Municipality Of Cornwallis
Cornwallis is a rural municipality located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It surrounds the east, south and west sides of Brandon, Manitoba. Most of the land comprising the municipality is farmland, but it contains a few settlements. One of the larger settlements, Sprucewoods, sits at the north gate of Canadian Forces Base Shilo and contains a large group of the municipal population. In the past, there has been friction between the community and the farming base that make up much of Cornwallis. The municipality is divided into six wards, each represented by one councillor. The council is made up of the six councillors and the reeve, or head of council. Hilltop, Manitoba
Hilltop is a rural community in the Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson and is a mixed agricultural area. Historically, the area was settled by Scandinavian immigrants, mainly from Sweden, starting in the 1880s. The community opened a post office in 1900 located on 19-17-17W and a one-room school was located on NE 24-17-18W. The other establishment which still is operational is a Baptist church founded by the early settlers and named after the locality. Erickson, Manitoba
Erickson is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to 1 January 2015. It is located on Highway 10 on 32-17-18W in south central Manitoba. The main industry of Erickson is agriculture. The community was originally established as a Canadian National railway point in 1905. When a post office was opened in 1908 it was known as Avesta. It was named after a town in south-central Sweden. Shortly after, the post office was moved near the railway station site which was named Erickson Station. The station had been named after the Postmaster, E. Albert Erickson. History The municipality was incorporated on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RM of Clanwilliam and the Town of Erickson. Waskada is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Brenda – Waskada within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held village status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located in the southwest corner of the province, close to the United States and Saskatchewan borders. It was settled as early as 1883 and incorporated as a village in 1948.
