Wergea
Wergea ( nl, Warga) is a village in Leeuwarden municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 1,560 in January 2017. There are two windmills in the village, De Hempenserpoldermolen and a paaltjasker. History The village was first mentioned in 944 as Wartengahe. The etymology is unknown. Wergea is a '' terp'' (artificial living mound) village from the early middle ages. During the 16th and 17th century, it developed due to good water connections and became a centre of trade and shipping. In 1664, the widow's court was founded by Vrouck van Popma for poor widows. The wooden buildings were rebuilt in 1864. The polder mill '' De Hempenserpoldermolen'' was built in 1863. In 1955, a pumping station was opened and the windmill became obsolete. The owner wanted to demolish it, however it was transferred to the water board for ƒ 2,-. In 1988, the mill was restored. In 1840, Wergea was home to 873 people. De Hempenserpoldermolen is a smock mill in Wergea, Friesland, Netherlands which was built in 1863 and has been restored to working order. It is listed as a Rijksmonument. History ''De Hempenserpoldermolen'' was built in 1863 to drain the Hempensermeerpolder. There had been a mill on the site since 1784. The mill worked by wind alone until 1955. A Brons diesel engine had been placed in the mill in 1953. In 1955, the mill was offered for sale and demolition, contrary to a directive requiring it to be kept in working order. The Provincial Executive refused permission for the mill's demolition and suggested that the municipality took over the mill. On 30 December 1959, the water board sold the mill to the municipality Boarnsterhim for ƒ2. A condition of the sale was that the diesel engine remained in the mill. The mill was restored in 1983 by millwright Tacoma of Stiens, Friesland. The diesel engine was replaced by an electric motor in 1986. The mill was sold to the Molenstichtin ... Tjaskers In Friesland
A tjasker is a type of small drainage windmill used in the Netherlands. There are thirteen tjaskers remaining in Friesland. Locations Allingawier ;Bij de Izeren Kou The paaltjasker was built in 1970 in Allingawier and is part of the ''Aldfaers Erf Route'', a route along museums in Allingawier, Exmorra and Piaam. The tjasker has four Common sails, which have a span of and can pump water in a circuit. The tjasker is owned by ''Stichting Aldfears Erf'' and can be visited when the museum is open. The name is derived from the nearby farmhouse, also part of the museum, called ''De izeren kou'' ( en, The iron cow). Augustinusga The boktjasker was at first located near Blessum where it drained a meadow. Annie Van Der Meer
Annie van der Steeg-Van der Meer (10 August 1928 — 30 May 2004) was a Dutch kortebaan speed skater, with her best results in the 1950s. During her career she won a total of 75 prizes. She became twice Frisian champion and won the silver medal at the national championships. Career She already did speed skating when she was young, but never competed in girls’ competitions. She started competing at the serious competitions. After a short while she started winning prizes. However, at a competition at IJsbrechtum she crashed. She rode against a rope she didn’t saw due to the mist. She had a concussion and couldn’t compete at other races that winter. She returned on the ice in the winter of 1948-49. She became the Frisian kortebaan champion in the winter of 1950-51 in Appingedam. She beat Aaltje Terpstra, a rider who won almost all competitions in Drenthe and Groningen.
