''We Were Young'' ( bg, А бяхме млади, ) is a 1961 Bulgarian drama film directed by Binka Zhelyazkova and written by Hristo Ganev. The film is centered on the Bulgarian resistance to Nazism in Sofia during the Second World War. Binka Zhelyazkova
Binka Zhelyazkova ( bg, Бинка Желязкова, 15 July 1923 – 31 July 2011), was a Bulgarian film director who made films between the late 1950s and the 1990s. She was the first Bulgarian woman to direct a feature film and one of the few women worldwide to direct feature films in the 1950s. Career Zhelyazkova graduated from the Sofia Theatre Institute in 1956 and briefly worked as an assistant director at Sofia Film Studios "Boyana" before directing her first feature, ''Life Flows Quietly By...'' (1957). This film established the collaboration with her husband, screenwriter Hristo Ganev, with whom she worked on many of her films. The film explored the lives of the former partisan fighters now in positions of power and was critical of the communist régime in Bulgaria. The leadership of the Bulgarian Communist Party reacted with fury and for 30 years banned the film by Party decree. Dimitar Panov
Dimitar Panov ( bg, Димитър Панов; July 18, 1902 – November 15, 1985) was a Bulgarian film and theater actor and director. Biography and career Panov was born on July 18, 1902, in the town of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. He made his debut in 1955 on the stage of the Plovdiv Theater in Chehov's play ''Five Small Comedies''. He continued to work with this theater, not only as an actor, but also as a director of such plays as ''Sluzhbogontsi'' by the eminent Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov. At the same time Dimitar Panov collaborated with the Plovdiv Opera where he took part in the operetta " The Bat" by Strauss and in the opera " The Beautiful Helen" by Offenbach. His cinematic debut was in 1960 in the film ''The Road Is Going Through Belovir'', written by Pavel Vezhinov and directed by Petar B. Vasilev. Georgi Georgiev-Getz ( bg, Георги Георгиев-Гец; October 4, 1926 – September 2, 1996) was a Bulgarian film and stage actor. Best known for portraying valiant and honest conservative men, Getz was among the prominent names in the Bulgarian cinematography and theatre during the second half of the 20th century.
