Waukon High School
Waukon High School is a public high school located in the city of Waukon, Iowa. It is the only high school in the Allamakee Community School District and serves many of the surrounding towns, including: Harpers Ferry, Waterville, and Dorchester. 2007 Renovation In 2007, a brand new $16 million addition was built onto the Senior High building. Previously Jr. High students attended a building separate from the Senior High. Both Jr. High and Senior High students will now use the new addition to the school. Waukon Wellness Center was also built and opened across the street from the school, Matt Hoover, season two winner of NBC's ''The Biggest Loser'', spoke at the grand opening. Athletics The athletic teams of Waukon High School are known as the Indians. WHS is part of the Northeast Iowa Conference. Dorchester, Iowa
Dorchester is an unincorporated community in northwestern Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. It lies along local roads just off Iowa Highway 76, north of the city of Waukon, the county seat of Allamakee County. Its elevation is 738 feet (225 m). The town was originally settled by Harvey Bell and Edmund Bell, and was named after Dorchester, England. Although Dorchester is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 52140, which opened on 21 May 1857. Dorchester is located in Waterloo Township. History Dorchester was platted in 1873. Dorchester's population was 56 in 1902, and 90 in 1925. Dorchester's location in the flood plain of the Upper Iowa River makes it vulnerable to flooding; the community was damaged by high waters in August 2007. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its female counterpart, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, (IGHSAU) is an associate member. Iowa is the only state that maintains separate governing bodies for boys' and girls' athletics. Sports overseen by the IHSAA are baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and wrestling. Mark Farley
Mark Farley (born April 5, 1963) is an American football coach. He is the head coach at the University of Northern Iowa, a position he has held since 2001. Farley started at inside linebacker at Northern Iowa from 1983 to 1985. He led the team in tackles in 1984 and 1985, was named Gateway Football Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 1985, first team all-conference three times, earned honorable mention All-America honors twice and twice named Academic All-American. He then became an assistant at Northern Iowa. In 1989, he was named linebackers coach by new head coach Terry Allen. In 1997, he followed Allen to the University of Kansas, but left in 2001 when the head coaching position at his alma mater opened up. Ho-Chunk
The Ho-Chunk, also known as Hoocągra or Winnebago (referred to as ''Hotúŋe'' in the neighboring indigenous Iowa-Otoe language), are a Siouan-speaking Native American people whose historic territory includes parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. Today, Ho-Chunk people are enrolled in two federally recognized tribes, the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. The Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska have an Indian reservation in Nebraska. While related, the two tribes are distinct federally recognized sovereign nations and peoples, each having its own constitutionally formed government and completely separate governing and business interests. Waukon Decorah
Waukon Decorah (–1868), also known as Wakąhaga (Wau-kon-haw-kaw) or "Snake-Skin", was a prominent Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) warrior and orator during the Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832. Although not a hereditary chief, he emerged as a diplomatic leader in Ho-Chunk relations with the United States. Family and early life Waukon Decorah came from a prominent Ho-Chunk family in what is now the U.S. state of Wisconsin. He was the son of Buzzard Decorah, who was in turn the son of a Ho-Chunk chieftess named Glory of the Morning and a French trader named Sabrevoir De Carrie. Waterville, Iowa
Waterville is a city in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 109 at the time of the 2020 census. History The first settlement in the neighborhood of what would become Waterville was in 1850. In 1854, Nathaniel Beebe erected the Waterville Mill. In 1855, Col. J. Spooner opened a store, and in 1856, James Beebe built a hotel.
