Washington City Council
The Council of the District of Columbia is the legislative branch of the local government of the District of Columbia, the capital of the United States. As permitted in the United States Constitution, the district is not part of any U.S. state and is overseen directly by the Federal government of the United States, federal government. Since 1975, the United States Congress has District of Columbia home rule, devolved to the Council certain powers that are typically exercised by city councils elsewhere in the country, as well as many powers normally held by List of state legislatures in the United States, state legislatures. However, the Constitution vests Congress with ultimate authority over the federal district, and therefore all acts of the council are subject to congressional review. Phil Mendelson
Philip Heath Mendelson (born November 8, 1952) is an American politician from Washington, D.C. He is currently Chairman of the Council of the District of Columbia, elected by the Council on June 13, 2012, following the resignation of Kwame R. Brown. He was elected to serve the remainder of Brown's term in a citywide special election on November 6, 2012, and re-elected to a full term in 2014 and 2018. Early years Mendelson came to Washington from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 1970 to attend American University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Political career Advisory Neighborhood Commission 1986–1989 In 1986, Mendelson ran unopposed to represent McLean Gardens in Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3C. He won the election.
