Wang Weixing
Wang Weixing (; born 1958) is a senior scholar for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in China, and a board member of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS). Wang attracted worldwide attention for an article he wrote criticising the newly elected President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, whom he described as being "extreme" and "emotional" as a result of her unmarried status. Claims Wang's article was published on Tuesday 24 May 2016, in the ''International Herald Leader'', a newspaper affiliated with the state news agency ''Xinhua''. He wrote that Tsai was "extreme" in her politics, being an unmarried woman lacking the "emotional balance provided by romantic and family life". He also claimed that Tsai was likely to "hold radical views that could encourage her to seek formal independence from China because she was unmarried and had no children". People's Liberation Army
The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the principal military force of the People's Republic of China and the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The PLA consists of five service branches: the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, and Strategic Support Force. It is under the leadership of the Central Military Commission (CMC) with its chairman as commander-in-chief. The PLA can trace its origins during the Republican Era to the left-wing units of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Kuomintang (KMT) when they broke away on 1 August 1927 in an uprising against the nationalist government as the Chinese Red Army before being reintegrated into the NRA as units of New Fourth Army and Eighth Route Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Association For Relations Across The Taiwan Strait
The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS; ; often abbreviated as 海协会 / 海協會) is an organization set up by the People's Republic of China for handling technical and business matters with the Republic of China (Taiwan). The ROC counterpart to ARATS is the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). The foundation's founding chairman was former Shanghai mayor Wang Daohan, honorary chairman Rong Yiren. Negotiations with SEF stopped in 1999, and after Wang's death in 2005, no new chair was appointed until 2008. Following the election of Ma Ying-jeou to the presidency of the Republic of China on Taiwan, talks between ARATS and SEF have restarted and progress was made in the areas of transport and economy such as the Three links in 2008 and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in 2010. Tsai Ing-wen
Tsai Ing-wen (; born 31 August 1956) is a Taiwanese politician serving as president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since 2016. A member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Tsai is the first female president of Taiwan. She served as chair of the DPP from 2020 to 2022, and also previously from 2008 to 2012 and 2014 to 2018. Tsai grew up in Taipei and studied law and international trade, and later became a law professor at Soochow University School of Law and National Chengchi University after earning an LLB from National Taiwan University and an LLM from Cornell Law School. Chen Chu
Chen Chu or Kiku Chen (; born 10 June 1950) is the current President of the Control Yuan and Chair of the National Human Rights Commission. Before assuming her current post, Chen had served as Secretary-General to the President from 2018 to 2020 and Mayor of Kaohsiung from 2006 to 2018, making her the longest-serving mayor of the city since the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. Straight Man Cancer
Straight man cancer () is a derogatory neologism used by Chinese feminists to describe men who are stubbornly supportive of traditional gender roles and therefore considered sexist and chauvinistic. Coined by the users of Chinese social networks Douban and Weibo in mid-2014, it refers to conservative men who unapologetically uphold traditional patriarchical values and belittle women's movement and gender equality, and are usually nationalistic and variably hostile to foreigners and ethnic minorities. The term originated from mainland China. It became popular in 2015 when scholar Zhou Guoping was accused of having the syndrome after a Weibo post.
