Wandilo
Wandilo is a north-western suburb of Mount Gambier in the Australian state of South Australia. It was named after the railway station on the Mount Gambier railway line, and is recorded to mean "a swamp where native companions resort". Wandilo was a junction on the railway line, north of Mount Gambier, with a branch line to Glencoe constructed in 1904, until it was decommissioned in 1959 then along with the Wolseley line to freight on 12 April 1995 and tourist services 1 July 2006. Mount Gambier Airport is located in this suburb. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Wandilo had a population of 176 people. Wandilo is located within the federal division of Barker, the state electoral district of Mount Gambier and the local government area of the District Council of Grant. Dismal Swamp, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Dismal Swamp is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-west of the municipal seat of Mount Gambier. Boundaries for the locality were created in February 1999 for the “long established name.” The name Dismal Swamp was used as early as 1845 when Anthony Sutton used the name for an occupation license on land described as being near Tarpeena. A school with the name operated from 1948 to 1954. Glencoe, South Australia
Glencoe is a town in South Australia, Australia, located north-west of Mount Gambier. At June 2016, Glencoe had an estimated population of 661. History Establishment On 6 March 1844, Tasmanian pastoralists Edward Leake and Robert Leake established Glencoe as a sheep station covering . They brought with them Saxon Merino sheep, cattle, and broke horses nearby at Lake Leake establishing the Inverary run with Adam Lindsay Gordon. In acquiring the land, the Leake brothers soon came into conflict with the local Aboriginal people, killing one or two in a skirmish in late 1844. In 1845, Leake with six other armed horsemen gave battle to a group of around 200 Aboriginal people who had taken a large number of sheep, and dispersed them after a couple of shots. Mingbool, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Mingbool is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide adjoining the border with the state of Victoria and about north-west of the municipal seat of Mount Gambier. Boundaries for the locality were created in February 1999 for the “long established name.” Its name is derived from the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Mingbool and ultimately from an aboriginal word for “water.” Mingbool’s western boundary aligns with the route of the Riddoch Highway while its eastern boundary is the state border. The principal land use in the locality is primary production. Two parcels of land in its south-west corner located close to both the Riddoch Highway and the Mount Gambier Airport in the adjoining locality of Wandilo are zoned for industrial purposes. Suttontown (originally Sutton Town) is a north-western suburb of Mount Gambier, a city in the south-east of South Australia. Boundaries for the suburb were created in February 1999 for the “long established name.” It was originally a private subdivision of sections 259 and 265 of the Hundred of Blanche, which were adjacent to the Wandilo and Wireless W roads level crossing of the Kalangadoo railway line. Mount Gambier Railway Line
The Mount Gambier railway line was a railway line on the South Australian Railways network. Opened in stages from 1881, it was built to narrow gauge and joined Mount Gambier railway station, which was at that time the eastern terminus of a line to Beachport. It connected at Naracoorte to another isolated narrow gauge line joining Naracoorte to Kingston SE, and to the broad gauge Adelaide-Wolseley line at Wolseley, at around the same time that was extended to Serviceton to become the South Australian part of the interstate Melbourne–Adelaide railway. Mount Gambier Regional Airport is an airport in the Limestone Coast, South Australia. It is located on the Riddoch Highway in Wandilo, about north of Mount Gambier. It is the only commercial airport servicing the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. As of March 2021, the airport is served by both Qantaslink and Rex Airlines, with multiple daily flights to Adelaide and Melbourne. Car rental is provided by Avis, Thrifty, Budget and Hertz. History The original Mount Gambier aerodrome was established when Mr H.S. (Stan) May and Mr S.C. Davis purchased land directly opposite the present airport on the Riddoch Highway. Mil-Lel is a northern suburb of Mount Gambier. The name for this suburb is believed to be a corruption of "Mullel", the name of a nearby waterhole. The name was historically written as two words: "Mil Lel" until the spelling was changed to "Mil-Lel" on 28 May 2009. The District Council of Grant is a local government area located in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, and is the southernmost council in the state. The council was formed on 1 July 1996 after the amalgamation of the District Council of Mount Gambier and the District Council of Port MacDonnell, and currently surrounds the City of Mount Gambier. The economy of the district is based on agriculture, forestry and fishing.
